Having just watched the news tonight, I am absolutely disgusted.
The story related to one of the first people dealt with at court. He had been caught in possession of 2 looted burberry shirts and charged with handling stolen goods. His sentence...? £100 fine which was cancelled by the court as he had been held for 21 hours prior to court and so they felt this was sufficient punishment.:mad::mad:
He then had the gall (after being interviewed anonymously to 'protect his future career'), to say that although he regretted his actions, he had become involved because, 'the police don't show me enough respect, innit'.
So much for showing rioters, 'the full force of the law', and, 'dealing with them robustly'.
!!!!!!, they might as well have just given him a kiss and patted him on the back....I am furious!

I agree...that is a joke! Sentencing is often far too lenient in my opinion.
I appreciated some news coverage outside a magistrates court where they showed people walking out, read out their names and what they are charged with...there were a couple who tried to cover their faces and asked not to be shown on tv so the film crew followed them to get a good shot
Name and shame! These people don't deserve to have their future careers or reputations protected, they should think about how their actions will affect their futures before they do these things!
If I saw anyone I knew involved in rioting/looting first thing I'd do is contact their employer, point them towards any pics/footage and ask if they want their company (and it's reputation) associated with thugs!
Some people act in a way that makes it blatantly obvious that they don't deserve to be respected by the police or anyone else for that matter! How do they figure that acting in a criminal manner will earn them respect? Idiots.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
They should have made him wear the Burberry shirts and then glued them on with bostik as a form of public embarrassment.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

So I can get a new wardrobe and the latest gadgets if I'm prepared to sit in a cell for a few hours? If it wasn't for the fact I have morals then I might be out joining them!0

Manchester and salford have threatend rioters who get identified with eviction from they're council homes, whether its they're family who live there or the rioter lives by themselves. Link
Apologies its not directly linked to the sentencing0 -

I wonder if they have checked with their legal department as to whether such a course of action is legal.
It sounds extremely dubious to me.
Throwing someone out of their home on a whim sounds like an empty threat - particularly if the 'guilty party' is not the main resident. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Then they'd have to re home them elsewhere anyway.0

I think they should all do community service - somewhere like the Sudan. It'll soon make them re-evaluate poverty and deprivation. I'd happily contribute to the air fares.I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly

not suprised.
Sentencing always seems to be really leniant.
I lost all hope after a few cases a year or so ago where completely unprovoked violent attacks lead to deaths, and the guilty were given like 6 years of which they'll serve 3. 3 years for the life of an innocent 20 something year old.
Not to mention that UK prisons are a complete walk-in-the-park anyway.
I have 1 family member who has been inside 3 times now and 2 friends who have also done a little time and all basically say that prison is 'boring'. Not scary, Nothing else!....just 'boring'. People have nothing to fear.
By the way, I dont surround myself with thugs, lol. 2 friends out of the hundreds I have who are all law abiding people isn't much. And I cant help having a nutter for a cousin!
The country is completely screwed. I've said it for years.
I noticed it more when I spent a little time in Canada and Germany.
The UK in comparison is so so so much more aggressive, confrontational, antisocial, angry as a whole.
The worst thing is that its gonna take so long to fix that nobody posting on this site today will be alive to enjoy the recovery.0
