At the last riots in the UK (Blackbird Leys) a copper once said to me that "the quickest way to sort out the rioting is to mount a video camera onto a sniper rifle - one throw of a molotov and "bang!"

The only part of the UK with legislation to allow soldiers to open fire is Northern Ireland. Under the Emergency Powers Act (1972 revision) petrol bombers are not legitimate targets. This was published on the Yellow Card (Rules of Engagement for Northern Ireland) and issued to all soldiers serving there.

It does not extend to GB.

Another poster has already pointed out that soldiers are not trained to help the police. The only regiments which were: the Home Defence Force, The Ulster Defence Regiment and the Royal Irish Regiment (Home Service Battalions) were disbanded.

    You're very welcome.
  • The thing that surprised me was that it all suddenly stopped. Is it because they are all under remand? Can't,for sure, imagine its all to do with policing or the weather so why?
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

  • Unless im missing something, the only real difference the Army can offer is the Firepower as they are not public order trained as such.

    Actually, they are

A Battalion of Jocks or Paras let loose with shields and pickaxe handles would sort it in short order :)
