Hello Again Everyone.:)

9th August 2011

Below is my experience in dealing with a Power Failure problem with my Panasonic Plasma TX-P42G10B commonly known as 'The Panasonic Plasma Red Light Of Death. Here is how I dealt with it and I hope that this information may help others in a similar situation. Some of the post is in bold writing because of some 'copy and pasting' from E.Mails sent and is set out like a bit of a diary of how I went on.:-

16th July 2011.

I purchased my Panasonic TX-P42G10B from Currys online on 29th. August 2009. The TV started showing off in so much that on pressing the start up power button either from the Remote Control or or the TV switch the red light power light would flicker but the TV would refuse to turn on. Occasionally the TV would switch on only to switch itself off again after a short passage of time.

On contacting Currys Service Dept. I was informed that as the set was outside of the usual one year Warranty period then I would be charged £60, which I paid, for the chaps to come out and possibly take the set away for assessment. I would then be charged extra to put right whatever problem there is with the set.

I advised Currys that this set is still under 2 years old and I believe this particular problem is inherent with many Panasonic models of plasma TV, including the TX-P range, and because of this I expect the 1979 Sale Of Goods Act to cover this particular repair, and therefore I am requested that I am not charged.

Currys said that if indeed Currys repair found this problem to be inherent then my £60 would be refunded and I would not be charged further.

Currys came out to collect the set on Thursday 21st. July 2011.

There is lots of evidence both here and in America in respect of complaints about this particular range of Panasonic Plasma TVs to the extent that this fault with Panasonic TVs is commonly known as 'The Red Light Of Death'!

When the guys came to collect the TV I gave the below letter to them in a sealed envelope to give to the Repair Manager:-

Dear Sir,

I purchased this Panasonic TX-P42G10B from Currys online on 29th. August 2009 order reference ******* Recently the TV started showing off in so much that on pressing the start up power button either from the Remote Control or the TV on/off switch the red light power light would flicker but the TV would refuse to turn on. Occasionally the TV would switch on only to switch itself off again after a short passage of time.

On contacting your Service Dept. I was informed that as the set was outside of the usual one year Warranty period then I would be charged £60 (which I have already paid) for your engineer to come out and possibly take the set away for assessment. I would then be charged extra to put right whatever problem there is with the set.

With respect, this set is still under 2 years old and after trawling the Internet Forums about this particular problem it is pretty obvious that this situation is inherent with many Panasonic models of plasma TV, including the TX-P range, to the extent that the condition is commonly known and named 'The Red Light Of Death"!

Because of this I expect the 1979 Sale Of Goods Act to cover this particular repair, and therefore I am requesting that I am not charged.

Your call center lady did say that if indeed Currys repair found this problem to be inherent then my £60 would be refunded and I would not be charged further.

This is my expectation.

Please also note that in the event you replace any part, like perhaps a faulty power board, then I am requesting that you return any faulty part to me when my TV is returned.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank You

Monday 8th August 2011

I had a telephone call from 'Curry's Customer Resolution Team' to be told that my TV is fixed and will be delivered back to me this Thursday 11th August 2011 ..........AND.............That there is NO CHARGE ................AND...........I would be refunded the £60 I have already paid in the near future.:D

The Currys chap I spoke to said that there had been a Power Supply Fault and that the Ysus Board and Power Supply Board had been replaced.

They had established that the fault had not been caused through negligence by me the Customer and that the problem was deemed a Manufacturing Defect and therefore not chargeable. (In other words...an inherent fault!)

So then, for anyone who has a problem with a TV or indeed most other, particularly electrical products after the One Year Warranty runs out I would say to try a few things.

1. Do a Google about that particular fault to try and establish if there are lots of complaints which in turn can make it an 'Inherent Problem' which will be covered by the 1979 Sale Of Goods act.

2. The Company you want to do the repair may just say "O.K....no problem, we will fix that free of charge". However, if they say that there will be a charge.......

Let the company you purchased the item from know what information you have and very nicely request that you not be charged for the repair of that particular fault.

3. Be prepared, as a very LAST resort to inform the Company that you will take the issue to the the Small Claims Court if neccessary in the event of them being 'awkward' and refuse to carry out the repair for free.

4. Do just that if you have to.

I may of course not been charged anyway. I will never know, but my way always is to be very polite but just let the retailer know that you are aware of any rights you have in respect of 'Out Of Warranty Repair', particularly in respect of the '1979 Sale Of Goods Act' and some other rights surrounding it.

Hope That Helps.

Bye.

    Well done on the result!

But I hardly think premature threats of going to court and citing your legal rights as a consumer BEFORE allowing the company to inspect the product & tell you how they plan on dealing with it would in anyway constitute good advise or make anybodies life easier :p

I thought I made it clear that one would only use the County Court mention as a LAST resort.

And if you are going to give YOUR advice, then at least spell it right.

That's TWO things you got wrong, which I expect from you anyway.

There is nothing in the OP that isn't in the FAQs?

Apart from the unusual interpretation given to some of the points, its broadly correct.

    Hi all,

Since the query has been resolved I'll close this one while waiting for the Forum Team to respond.

forum_faqs_small_bubble.gifWhy has my post/thread been removed without telling me?

Posts/threads are deleted so we're no longer"publishing" them. While you may have posted it once we are made aware of it - we are legally liable too as the publisher. When something is deleted, it's removed from public view but it's still viewable by the Forum Team and can be reinstated if it needs to be. It won't show up in a forum search.

We never contact people when their posts are deleted. The sheer numbers of posts removed every day means it's simply impossible to contact everyone.

The Forum Team won't respond to aggressive emails demanding to know why a post/thread's been removed but if you send a polite email asking, it may review or explain the decision where possible (sometimes legal reasons prevent this).
