I thought it was the intention of the water companies that everyone should have a water meter fittted, but it doesn't seem to be happening very quickly.

    Much fairer system all round.

Strictly speaking it was the intention of the Government when they introduced the Water Privatisation Act.

All properties built post 1990 must have a meter and on change of occupant a water meter was to be fitted.

Unfortunately they didn't make that latter provision mandatory and some Water Companies don't enforce that regulation.

Be warned - we had a letter about 4 months ago stating that Anglian would be taking over responsibilty for the pipes off the main road and onto the actual propery and this would have no impact on householders. A notice has just been posted in our local press that Anglian are now going to be installing meters on every property in our area. This is a backdoor route of switching everyone to meters and gaining access to our properties. I have no intention of going onto a meter despite being a sole occupier and low user - a) I have two water bills from two suppliers - Anglian for drinking water, Severn for sewerage, so we are in an expensive water zone anyway b) Anglian are agressive when it comes to debtors and I envisage many more complaints about this company. As I have had no choice in this I will be researching a) how to prevent them accessing my land b) how to prevent them installing a meter on my land. Any advice? Water is going the same way as other utilities - profit for shareholders!

The meter would be on my land and for clean water supply not sewearge. There are no man holes on the main road or pavement. Each property has two manholes on their property - my point is this - the pipes may now belong to Anglian as they misinformed homeowners, but as there is no leak there is no valid reason why I should give them access onto my land - it is trespass surely. I appreciate everyones comments but I do feel that the less advantaged may well end up paying dearly in the future!
  • You can't stop then installing a meter..They will just get a warrant of entry and do it that way. The government has said everyone should be on a meter so that is what is happening.
Also the profit thing is a real red herring as that is already agreed for 5 years in advance and nothing can change that..More meters or less makes no difference at all.

Good luck but I fear you will end up with a meter anyway so it might be best to invest your time in something else or rather then fight the water companies fight the government as they are the ones that made these rules.

Oh and compared to some you are not in all that expensive an area.

Installing a meter does not mean that they will be immediately seeking to switch you from RV billing.
AW have every right to install a meter beyond the street boundary of your property if they so wish, it's not your property. That's the usual location for meters-not on your property.

The letter you received would have been about sewers not your water supply

If the stop tap is on public land you have no choice whatsoever and it cant be stopped, if its on private land you can refuse access and they wont force you to have it installed

That is not totally true, they can force a meter with a warrant of entry..As the government has clearly stated all should be on a meter it has put into place a way for each company to enforce that should they wish too..Sooner of later it is going to happen and just saying " it is private land" will not solve the problem as the pipe work is still the water companies and they can gain access to that.

You are right and wrong, AW will not forceably install a meter on private property under enhanced metering ;)

They do not need to install the meters 'on private property'. They will be installed on the street boundary in most cases. Therefore no permission is required from the householder.
