Working all night on New Year's Day evening when you should be asleep anybody (and then having to go straight back in to work for the day 1/2 an hour later...)?

    HI steve,
I also rely on the old callout for large lumps of my wage. We too used to be expected in after a `night out` until somebody had a think about the health and safety aspect of working all night and then driving about on works business the next day. The result, the schedulers dont expect anyone who has worked late in until they feel ok, or as a guide 8-10 hours rest after long out of hours jobs. Great overtime and a lie in.

    Cheers,

    B

Doing 8 hours on my normal day off on tuesday. Nice extra £90 after tax, that'll do me for a day in which I would've just sat about doing nowt!

At my old job I was paid hourly for anything I did over my normal week, so i'd often tag a 3hr crew shift on to the end of my normal management hours & sometimes a 6th day. Now my job doesnt offer overtime, but I have a second job. Its good that I get to go and do something different instead of just spending loads of hours in the same place (I have done 70hrs before in a week & not really felt tired)

Definatly the best way to earn extra cash fast & pay those debts off!
  • Wish my job had overtime available, I do have a 2nd job for 4 hours a week but no overtime there either! Oh well maybe a 3rd job then?

I make DH do all the overtime that's going ;) he gets paid time and half for anything over 38 hrs,we cannot manage on his basic bring home of £310/week but with overtime he brings home around £550/week.Sometimes I send him in on Sundays at double time, but the tax is a rip off and hardly worth bothering.
A few years back, before the new working regs came in,I have known DH go to work Thursday night, work through, stay on for the day shift, then the Friday night shift and Saturday day shift with no break,he used to do this on a regular basis, but then the government stopped it all, thank goodness ;)

I used to be a keyholder at the bank I worked for, so I got extra money each month on the basis that I'd get called out if the alarms went off or if there was some other problem out of hours. I only got called out once to a burgler alarm, which was a false alarm (thank goodness) but as it was at 3am they let me have the next morning off with full pay. The good thing was, if we ever had workmen in after hours, I got paid 2 x normal rate just to sit in the office while they were working. And I could get a pizza delivered on expenses!

One Sunday morning, the branch was being re-decorated. There were dust sheets everywhere, three painters in overalls, and a stepladder in front of the door. I was sat at a desk, in my jeans, reading the paper.

I was suprised when someone came through the door (bearing in mind it was 7am on a Sunday), climbed under the ladder, avoided all the pots of paints, walked up to the desk and asked if he could cash a cheque!

The only other time I got called out was 6 weeks after I left. Someone forgot to update the records I think!

Yes (but call outs), back in the glory days I could make an extra £500-£900 a month after tax. It was a good way of helping but that was short lived. Now its more like £120 a month but every little helps!

Same with me - all but 2 of us have dropped out of the on call rota so I'm getting an extra £500 a month (£750 if I get 3 in a 5 week month). My boss has been looking at merging our on-call rota with 2 others so they can all save money though so that could disappear soon. :(
  • Yep I worked new years day. 1 3/4 and a day off in lieu but I am trying to get them to give me the money instead.

When i do overtime work has to pay me a minimum of 3hrs pay even if the bit they want covering only lasts for 30-40 mins. Or 2 hrs. Overtime is generally pretty well available all the time but it is hard to balance the need to clear the debts and sanity beacuse you cant remeber what days it is cuz youve just worked you third day of in 2 weeks. Mind you only one more debt to go for me. So for a while i think i'll forgo the sanity option:eek:
