I have previously been bankrupt although this is no longer on me credit report
my bank is refusing / making it very dificult to upgrade my basic account as there is a marker on my account....surely htis is unfair? they are holding me bankruptcy against me even though i have served my tie as it were and have never hidden it or lied about it
i have provided them credit reports showing the bankruptcy is no longer on there
does anyone know where i stand with them unfairly having this marker on my account?

If the information they are using is accurate, there are no rules against it.
You could try a complaint to the Data Protection Registrar.
Or switch your banking elsewhere.0 -
It's up to them.
Try a different bank.0 -
the marker relates to the bankruptcy there are no other bad records on the account
would seem a bit pointless taking all record of the bankruptcy off your credit report if the bank can still keep a record of it as long as they like? i thought there was some kind of law against that?
i have already told them if they decline the app i will take all my banking (including business banking) elsewhere0 -
Take it elsewhere.
What bank is it? I was going to point out that as private businesses they're not obliged to do business with you, and can decline your business on the basis you have been bankrupt; however long ago. It drops off your credit file so new searches will not discover it; your previous bank can keep the details for up to 6 years after your account is closed.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

it is Natwest
when you say they can keep a record for 6 years after your accout is closed i assume you meant the bank account not any bankruptcy accounts? i didnt know that and that is good to know
so in theory as there is no record of the bankruptcy on my credit files then any new searches with new banks should be ok (obviuosly taking into account other personal factors like income ect etc the usual credit stuff)
hmmm you would think with times as they are they would be more keen to keep customers!
still if they arent doing anything wrong i dont seem to have a leg to stand on!0 -

There is generally a question on the application saying something like "have you ever been declared bankrupt" whether this is likely to make any difference will be down to the different banks criteria.0 -
Banks have long memories, were some of the debts involved in the bankruptcy with the RBS group? Whilst a debt cannot be enforced after 6 years there is no requirement on a bank to ignore it either.0

You need to speak to the Customer Lending Centre to see if they will take the Z marker off your account.
As this would have been put in place when your basic bank account application was accepted as they would have been aware you was BR at that point.
However saying that the bank do not have to accept any new applications from anyone if they choose not too providing its not racial etc.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -

The bank can keep any relevant info about you that they find out, and Data Protection allows them to keep it long after your account was closed. (They argue things like its for tax, or in case any complaint is raised as 6 years tends to be the limits for these)so in theory as there is no record of the bankruptcy on my credit files then any new searches with new banks should be ok (obviuosly taking into account other personal factors like income ect etc the usual credit stuff)
Yes, in theory it drops off completely after the 6 years and other banks should not see it when they search. As above, the application may ask though.
Also bear in mind who you're applying with because NatWest is, obviously, part of the RBS group. And bankruptcy indicators will likely have been placed on all your accounts, even savings, at the time; so anywhere you held any accounts might well have details.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0
