As long as that account is open and then for 7 years (or so) after they can keep it recorded that you were bankrupt - I agree its unfair but they can do it.

Out of Interest which Bank is it? A new application with a different bank will only search your file as it is now so the bankruptcy shouldnt be an issue although I notice that a lot of applications ask "Have you EVER been declared bankrupt" so could in theory cause a similar issue.

IMHO there should be a question along the lines of "Have you been declared bankrupt or the subject of a BRU in the last X years, or ever been the subject of a BRO" - this would mean those who co-operate with the OR are effectively rehabilitated after X years and those who dont or who have caused the need for a BRO have to always declare.

Banks can decide what services they offer you or dont offer you. So, whilst you may feel its unfair, there is nothing you can do about it. They are not a charity and are not forced to offer you services. If you have complained and they still wont back down then there is no point taking it further as the FOS will not rule in commercial decisions.

    i agree!!!

and while everyone points out that banks are businesses who can do what they want it seems we had little choice in bailing them out or paying big fat bonus's.....but hey thats a whole other argument LOL :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

thankyou to everyone for your replies it has been very helpful. I think if they decline again i will go elsewhere to a completely unrelated bank and see what they say
