Vile old lady

Thanks everyone. I am now relaxing in my hotel room with a nice glass of wine, and concentrating on how nice the day otherwise was, and what a complete sweetie dd is! We've only been in the hotel just over 24 hours and already most of the staff and quite a few of the other guests know her name and are smiling and greeting her when they see her. Though she has her challenges she is a very good natured child, and most people warm to her when they see her. I suspect this was one of the reasons why I was so shocked that someone called her a hooligan when she is anything but.
Thanks for all your support and kind posts. I do feel better for having let off steam. Like others, this isn't the first and won't be the last time we encounter nastiness due to her disability but for some reason it penetrated more just because we were away from home on holiday and up to that point having a lovely day. But we continued to have a lovely day afterwards and have another 12 days left!0 -

I do agree that the elderly lady's behaviour was totally out of order and I can also understand why the OP was upset.
However, I also agree with the poster who talked about ageism. Calling the woman an 'old bat' and similar is also out of order.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

Id agree with you if these remarks were made to her face. Then we would all be lowering ourselves to her level. Im sure if people on this forum found themselves in the OPs position with this woman we would all conduct ourselves far better than the old lady appears capable of. Im hoping she has a conscience and is now deeply regretting verbally attacking a disabled child in the manner which she did. She showed no compassion or control.
OP I hope you and your family have an enjoyable and relaxing holiday and that this incident will be a one off.0
