I think all your points are fair, but its not the cost of the phone that throws me, its the cost and a commitment of a contract. Can you use blackberried PAYG? I have no idea!
And I think this feeds back to the point of poverty of ambition and other issues to do with pride, self providence etc.
edit: since read your later posts with which I concurr. Should read all thread before posting, apologies.0 -

I don't think people are always rational when they think about how much fixed costs impact their budget. I used to speak to people all the time when I worked for O2 who thought nothing of having a £70/mth phone bill, but clearly weren't capable of the basic maths required to figure out how they'd end up with said £70/mth bill!0 -
I am going to have to stop reading the Guardian now, it is making me boil with anger.0

Oh, I agree. BUT, that's sort of the point...people are not rational about their wants/expectations v abilities/realities.0 -
I hate that people will probably think that this was caused by the tories and not by the last decade of labour. Bit like blaming the chemo for your hair falling out instead of the cancer.0

I did the post run and wanted to check if M+S shut @ 5,30 or 6 as I wanted to run down to the market...so popped in (and noted the slip on gates on the doors that aren't usually there) and spoke to the girl on lingerie.......it was a bit surreal but the converatuion went roughly as follows;
'' Hi what time do you close tonight?''
'' oooh well it depnds on the riots''
A conversation about rioting in M&S? Is this what the country has come to?
The lads out burning and looting are somebody's son, brother, cousin, boyfriend (and most depressingly, probably someone's father). This has nothing to do whoever's in government; morals and manners are free in this country. If any relative or friend of mine came round with looted goods, I'd frogmarch them to the police station myself. Why would you want to live with someone who thinks it's a laugh to torch properties with residential flats above? Harbouring scum is even worse than being scum. Heartening to hear how some communities are starting to defend themselves.They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -

Obviously nice family sorts, they must have been thinking of their mums to consider M&S as a looting target.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
