I watched the news report and thought (1) Who on earth loots a Carpetright? and (2) Carpetright probably won't mind too much making an insurance claim and then not re-opening, given their woes in this economy.
Absolutely awful for people who lost their homes and independent businesses (and the Carpetright local employees). They did nothing. Why didn't the mob focus their anger and petrol bombs on the police station? Not that that would have been justified either but I just don't understand the targeting of the building in question.
EDIT: Damn, that was my 1000th post. Should have made it something better.0 -
I wondered the same about Carpetright. The only thing I could guess at was that there were a lot of people who had stanley knives to hand and the ability to cut to size.
Though I also saw a woman on TV walk out brazenly with a huge rug and then struggle off down the street with it. It can't be that difficult to pick them up on CCTV if we are truly a surveillance society. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Lots of insurance polices do not cover "civil disturbances" or riots. So riots aren't victimless crimes.
In the case of large retailers most (but not all due to the state of the economy) can get money lent to them to sort things out but in the case of small retailers, people whose homes are damaged and whose cars have been burnt out they have to bear the cost themselves.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

The problem starts before the courts are involved in most cases. Disrespect to teachers. Disrespect to people in the street, in shops in businesses. Also, failure to acknoledge when disrespect hasn't taken place, encouraging positive interaction, stamping on the negative....its the fault of ALL of us who don't step up to smile at kids, and who don't step up to tick them off when they are just a bit naughty.
It's a bit hard to encourage or tell kids off when you get their parents (and this is all classes) blanking you or shouting at you for telling them their kid was really well behaved or stopping them from doing something dangerous.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I absolutely agree. And its not a good situation, parents need to take responsibility, but so, IMO, do the rest of us...the parents have got over protective and not demanding enough both.....why?0 -
UK police are the laughing stock of the world after every news agency has broadcast picutres of people looting high street stores in broad daylight with no resistance at all.
Disgusting.0 -

I love the way they are queueing to loot. Very British looters :rotfl:.0 -
I don't understand.
Community is outraged at the death of a local man, so they start stealing off of each other and burning each others houses and cars.
Right... didn't some Darwin guy write something about this? Idiots. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
On the radio news they blame it on social deprivation, and the education has let them down .
i feel as some people are afraid to say it as it is !
it was the fully educated cambridge /oxford and london undergraduates who smashed through central london recently on tution protests..
The only one i can blame is the very very polite british police that always tries its best to be too nice specially to the hoodies or gangs.
Why dont smash their heads in with battons every time they became 4-5 together and try to intimidate the police or members of the public?-- I done it once with 5 guys who tried to roob my motorbike...my helmet broke on some ones back and as soon as the rest saw that it hurt, they run like dogs.. i served 48 hours ''comunity service '' for it but i would have loved if i broke each one of them back and served 48 hours x5 .
3 years passing that way and seeing these guys together, they never bothered looking at me again0
