Yes, that's what my dentist tells me, a check up every 6 months (£15.50)

Thanks to reading Toothsmith's posts this time last year (having recently moved) I was prompted to register with a local NHS dental practice who were still taking new patients. 2 months after the start of the new contract (June 2006), they were no longer taking new patients. (Wonder why??)

I believe (please correct me if I am wrong) that it is now the NHS patient's responsibility to ensure that they receive check-ups at the interval recommended by the NHS dentist, otherwise they may run the risk of being removed from the practice books....??

Please advise....for those of us lucky enough to have an NHS dentist...still!

And I will sign the petition.

This was the case with the old NHS dental contract, the new dental contract has done away with registration. You are no longer registered so this is wrong.

What I just do not understand is: WHY is everything so expensive here ?
Since 1997 the money going into the NHS has almost tripled. Sorry Mr Blair - I can see NO improvement.

Oh, I know why we don't see a lot of improvement here and its hard to say whether its the governments fault. The government has pumped stupid anounts of money into the NHS and Education.

However, because pay scales in the public sector have been very poor compared to the private sector and that they were understaffed, most of the money went to address this. A large bulk also went to address computerisation in education.

It will require additional money to be pumped in to see further benefits. But a lot of this isn't the fault of the current government - health and education in all fairness was in very very poor shape. Actually, so was transport.

This petition was on 200 odd when I left to go on holiday, and when I come back it's well over 500.

Thank you to everybody and their friends, and please keep it up.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

There was a letter in the paper the other day from a man who was trying (unsuccessfully) to find an NHS dentist in his area. His local Health Authority told him that only "unwaged" people can get onto an NHS dentists list in that area.

He went on to point out that we are now in the ludicrous position whereby the people who are paying for the NHS dentistry service are not allowed to use it, whereas those who are contributing nothing are allowed to use it.

The lunatics are truly running the asylum now !!!!

I have just read this comment, and things may be about to change!

For one thing, this is 'discrimination on the grounds of ability to pay NHS charges' which is specifically forbidden by the contract from the dentist's side (But not, apparently from the PCT's)

Secondly, across the country, the expected 'income' for the NHS from patient dental charges is looking like it will end the year over £100 million short! Due to patient's having to pay £42 for a single filling deciding they'd be better off paying privately!

So - very soon, PCTs will be 'directing' dentists with NHS contracts to 'concentrate more' on charge paying NHS patinets.

It is indeed a truely mad world!

Either way, I know that the government can't afford to pump money into dentistry, and if they do something else will suffer badly.

    I agree with this 100%.

What I would like is the money that is currently available for NHS dentistry to be spent on kids, and maybe a pain relief service for anyone who just wants this.

If there is anything left, then a basic 'allowance' for each and every person to spend in a dentist of their choice.

That way everybody gets something back from the pot. Not just those who happen to have an 'NHS' dentist.

THIS article from Norfolk came to my attention this evening.

Just another one of many tales of mis-management from up and down the country.
