No - universities are government funded to provide dentists.

They don't provide lawyers for the CPS, they don't produce mathematicians for the Office of National Statistics they don't produce chemists for Government research labs.

And The 'NHS' practices dentists join are not 'Owned' by the NHS. They just have Infrastructure -owning dentists who happen to contract for the NHS.

A dentist CAN leave university and join a private practice, and with funding as it is, this will happen more and more in the future.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I am so confused as to why you owe so much allegiance to private sector, please do not quote your own family medical history ,it is not relevant to the overall situation .I do not know the dentists that you have had experiences with.We are talking about the general population and the need for care for those who are not in the fortunate position to be able to buy time and just want treatment ,not small talk and piped music.

Some people just recognise the difference Ken.

The world is not 'one size fits all'.

This is not East Germany, where you give all the population a Trabant and tell them it's the pinacle of motoring.

But there is no difference, the final result is the same ,I believe that my NHS dentist is as good as you any day.

I never stated that practices are owned by the NHS .
Will you be taking on a graduate from university or have you ever done so?
The universities are funded by the government ,let us get that point clear.

Did you ever stop to think about the how the universities go about training dentists? They provide facilities for students to treat patients. Students do not get paid by the NHS for the time they spend providing care.

All universities are funded by government. Most students have been educated at public expense in school and at university. Would you argue that everyone in this country should work for little/nothing for the government because of the money that has been spent on educating them from the age of 5?

Yes the NHS pays students' tuition fees for one year on a 5 year course and provides a small bursary that year (all means tested by the way), but patients are treated for the NHS in the dental school.

On graduation most students go on to work as Vocational Trainees in NHS practices for one year (at least they could until the new contract was introduced and made it uneconomic for practices to continue involvement in the scheme). VTs are not paid a great deal compared to other members of the profession and therefore more than repay the costs of supporting them through university in that one year.

I just wonder what your motives are in continuing to come up with ever more fanciful claims about dentists. Either you are one of the most bigoted money savers to frequent this forum or else you're just trying to create an argument for the sake of it! :T

I would make the point and you do also that the NHS has a rather important input in the creation of a dentist , they then leave for private sector work ,creating a shortage of NHS dentists. That is the reason the general public are unable to find a GDP.
