Many thanks, on behalf of my friend for all your replies and offers of advice.
It certainly seems that Sky will have NO sympathy whatsoever and is hardly worth the bother.
Perhaps thats why her parents have Virgin Media!!:)

In this current financial situation, just what is somebody supposed to do? Maybe as in 'debt problems' whereby you write to the creditor and perhaps offer '£5' a month, I suggested she should try that. lol

The only way they'd do that is by her going thru the debt collector.Sky themselves wont do it.

I'm with most other people on here, you can't just cancel your DD and not expect any come back. Sky will sell the debt onto a debt collection agency, the debt collection agency will track you down, make all reasonable attempts to recover the debt and if that fails obtain a court order for bailiffs to come to your address and remove goods.

Just because they haven't found you, doesn't mean they won't. If your the type of scum that try's to run and hide from your debts then fair enough, after 6 years the debt technically becomes "time barred" but you're going to have to stay off the radar or the debt collection company will find you.

Tell your friend she entered into a contract and is duty bound to pay. However, if shes fallen on hard times, she must be upfront and honest with Sky, they're more likely to help there that way rather than trying to "do a runner".

I can assure you 'timberflake' My friend is not the type of 'Scum' that you refer to, trying to run and hide and nor had she plans on doing a 'runner'
She is trying to juggle financially at the moment, and luxuries are obviously the first to go.
She asked me to 'look into' her rights in this situation. Skys customer service with a sympathetic approach seems to be none existent!

She agreed a 12m contract, and that is what they will hold her to.
Sorry that is not the answer you wanted, but this same question is asked several times every week (usually in relation to mobile phone contracts), and the answer is always the same.
The only valid grounds for voiding such a contract are death or bankruptcy: changes in personal circumstances are not.

I wasn't refering to you're friend, I was refering to the other person in this thread who owes Sky £2k!

they can and will put a default on the credit file, its a consumer credit agreement you enter into. I would love to know how you owe 2k as sky is max £80 a month

I also find it hard to believe that anyone could run up £2k of debt with Sky, but maybe he/she watches an insane amount of box office movies :rotfl:

A word of warning. Virgin Media are worse. For instance, if you move home they lock you into another 12 month contract. Sky don't do this.

Annoyingly I had VM installed into a property in September 2009 and had to move in May 2010 and October 2010 and I still have another three months left with them before I can cancel.
