Cancelling Sky before end of contract

My friend is 4 months into her contract at a rented apartment. Due to financial problems she will be leaving her accomodation and returning home to her parents (whom incidently have digital TV)
How does she stand?
Still having to pay a contract until its end will add further to her financial problems. Another friend has suggested she cancels her direct debit and leaves no forwarding address. I suggest to phone and hope they will be sympathetic. To this though she has been told Sky are NOT sympathetic to problems.:( Anyone can help please? Thank you

My suggestion being write into customer relations and explain the situation offer a compromise ie pay half of the remaining contract at the lowest package.

At the end of the day sky doesnt have to be sympathetic but try to communicate with them that way customer services over the phone wont be able to do anything nor cancellations.

Cancelling the direct debit and leaving no forwarding address will not help. The debt will be sold on to a Debt Collection Agency who are experts at tracking people down.

As the person above said, your friend will just have to contact Sky and see if and what help is available. Offering to pay half the contract and returning the box may be enough.

they cant keep you on contratc if you dont stay in the premises you set the contract up.

And sky cant put there debt on your credit file. They cant force you to pay nor can debt collectors.

At the end of the day the contract isnt bound to your household its bound to the person the only way sky will cancel it is if they cannot provide it to you.

At the end of the day its down to you sky will send debt collectors after you if your happy to try avoid them and never have sky in your name again without paying it off id say just write in but if not then yeah cancel your DD and run.

    Actually,they can in a way.
I lost my job in the 10th month of my Sky contract.I cancelled my D/Debit with them, they wrote to me & said as I had used a Debit/Credit card for the initial payment/months subscription (can't remember which one I used it on) they would take the final amount using that method.
Which they did try to do but as I'd changed banks, the was no money to take...(I moved away from Santander)
So if the OP has used that method to pay for Sky,then they'll try that approach to get their money.

She can move the Sky contract to her parent's home if they only have Freeview or Freeat.
Otherwise no alternative to carry on paying, or have her credit file trashed for 6 years if she just cancels the DD.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If the OP cancels the DD then they will put a default on the credit file.
Moving properties is irrelevant to this-a change of address does not void a minimum 12m contract, you either carry on paying, pay the ETC, or move the contract to the new address.

They don't put a 'debt' on your file, but they will most certainly record a default.
They may not have done that to you for all sorts of reasons, but suggesting that the OP can simply stop paying and expect no comebacks is absurd.
