I don't understand the link between being Asian and treating others like skivvys. Perhaps you can explain it to me.

If its day surgery what stuff does your FIL need picking up - didn't they know in advance he needed to go in?
Tell them to make other arrangements, nothing wrong with that at all in the circumstances.0 -
He had to go to a&e he's on oxygen 24 hours a day due to lung damage and had a chest infection .0

Right. I didn't realise this was exclusive to the Asian community.

I guess your in-laws have 3 options -
get other family members to sort out what they need sorting, your OH could do it if he's so inclined, in his marginal time, or they can get taxis.0 -
Maybe use this as a time for a peace chat, have a good conversation, say that you would be happy to help out occasionally on the understanding that the tensions between you cease, and that you can act as adults should with one another.
If the same attitude exists from her (bearing in mind that she must be worried sick about her husband) then walk away guilt free.
Also your husband will need to go and see his parent i presume sometime then he can take things in with him, or go together to create less tension.0 -
