Naples - HELP!!!

  • Afraid i never saw Naples other than from the train from Rome and the inside of the train station on the way to Pompeii. My advice would be that Pompeii is unmissable! I am an archaeology nerd but my bf also thought it was great! Give it at least half a day to do it justice (i stayed for 6 hours!)
we have love enough to light the streets.

I've been visiting the Amalfi coast for over 10 years now and love it to bits. Not a big fan of Sorrento - but everyone has different tastes. I like the area between Amalfi and Salerno.

The money saving part of me finds it far cheaper also. Especially if you avoid the really touristy areas. I find that the prices in the villages of Minori and Maiori on the coast are a fraction of those in Sorrento and Amalfi.

You must find time to visit Ravello. The most panoramic view of the coastline.

Also, try to use the ferries to get a wonderful view of the coastline. Really cheap and easy to use also. Buses are cheap also, but can be really, really busy. Queuing is an American/British thing, so if you are standing at a bus stop and a bus arrives if you act in a typical British manner you will be left standing. You need to buy tickets in advance from bus stations, shops, etc (look for the SITA sign). If there are two of you, one get on the bus at the rear door and the other get on at the front to stamp the ticket. You've been to Rome before so you'll have an idea about how mad public transport can be.

Outside the major tourist towns, try to use a bit of Italian. Don't need to be fluent. Even a few words (please, thank you, good morning and so on) are appreciated and go along way. Locals who know no English suddenly find some if you make some effort (can't blame them).

The food is fantastic. Even the most simple food is delicious. My most favourite place to eat in the entire world is a small pizzeria in the village of Maiori. It is basically a wooden hut on the beach but it has the most amazing pizzas cooked in the woodfired oven. Only a couple of euro for a pizza. Two people can have a 3 course meal with local wine and mineral water for £20! Be aware though, in some of the more touristy areas it can cost considerably more.

    Hope this gives a flavour.

  • We stayed at Villaggio Verde last June and it was fabulous. Look at https://www.villaggiioverde.com and trip advisor for reviews. It is lodges and a hotel with a fabulous pool, about 20 minutes max walk into Sorrento. You will also find it in Thomson Small & Friendly.

    I also looked at hotelscomparison.com for apartments/hotels.

I wish I was going back to Sorrento, it's amazing.
