Naples itseld is a dump IMHO ...you take your life in your hand crossing the road then once you have crossed you will be lucky not to get mugged.
We only went on a cruise so cant say what the hotels were like but I hated the area. On the other hand Capri was lovley and only a short ferry ride from the port
If you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel

I visited Naples when staying in Amalfi. I was glad I was staying in Amalfi! It's easy to get to Capri Naples (Pompeii) and Sorrento from Amalfi so it makes a good base.

  • my family are from Naples, and it's not that bad as long as you keep your wits about you.
There are some lovely places, amazing places to eat, but it is a very poor city with a high crime rate, your money will go much further than places such as amalfi and capri.
Traffic and driving in general is a nightmare, but they do have a very good rail system.

Crikey!!!! bit different to Rome then!!! my plan was to stay along the Amalfi coast somewhere (prob sorrento i guess is good?) but to maybe spend 3 nights somewhere else... hence thinking Naples.. but if its that bad i might give it a miss!

i love italy and have had lots of holidays there where we stayed either in sorrento on somewhere else along the amalfi coastline and i have to say its fantasic. i dont think it matters where along the coast you stay as the transpost is great with the trains and the buses although the bus isnt for the faint hearted :) i wouldnt recommend staying in naples as although there are things to see and do it is a bit different to sorrento etc. i would say visit it for the day and see what you think and if you like it go back another time. you can get the train from sorrento to naples and it only takes about 1hr and is very cheap. italy itself you will find a lot more expensive now as youprobably visited when they had the lira. now they have the euro it is along the lines of here but you dont mind so mauch as the setting is fabulous. we always used to get an easyjet flight to naples and then either get the train after a taxi ride or even easier and massively cheaper there is an airport bus from right outside the airport that will take you direct to sorrento or along the coast elsewhere. this was about 6 euros last time we used it, actually that might have 6 euros for us both, cant remember. we then stayed in an apartment right on the main square in sorrento which to be honest is amazingly cheap and was lovely to be in the hustle and bustle of it all. not sure i can post the link but if you want it just PM me. you could also look on the sorrento tourist info website which has lots of info. im so jealous :) i could talk forever about sorrento. it is the most amazing, beautiful place i have ever been to. on the other hand we went to rimini last year as we were told it was great for the little one, never again. it was awful and all i wanted to do was come home. totally different. in sorrento the italians cant do enough for you, in rimini they are horrid.

goodluck and enjoy wherever you go.
    regards

To confirm what Carol has said, stay in Sorrento and go to Naples for the day on the train. The station is right in the middle of Sorrento and it only goes one way, so no danger of getting the wrong train !! It's a gorgeous trip, you see all the sights and I seem to remember it being quite cheap. My friend and I got hassled quite a lot in Naples (2 single females) but Sorrento was a different story. The ferry to Capri is really easy as well, just hope on at the little port and you can't go wrong. One place to visit in Sorrento is "The Foreigners Club" it's got the most fantastic views of the whole coast, you can see all the way to Naples. I'm so jealous as I would love to go back :(

oh the foreigners bar, i wish i never saw this thread, i so fed up now :) probably the best view in the world. i have sent you a private message with the link for the apartments. if they have no booking either side they are very good at letting you book when you want. all you need to do is email and ask.

there are over 200 places to eat and the food is very nice, we never had a bad meal anywhere. oh and to sit and watch the world go by in the square whilst having a drink at one of the bars is great. it comes alive late at night and everyone just stands around chatting and strolling. i have bever once feared for my safety, they are so friendly.

i will be your tour guide if you like ;)

read a review by experianced travel writer in the Sunday times to stop anyone in their right mind going to Naples .

cannot quote it word for word but this is the general gist.

Terrible traffic , rubbish on the streets , beggars in every doorway, refused service in bars just cause english, tutted at in shops by staff, attempted mugging, smug and corrupt locals , and dirty+ smelly all floated by a sea of dodgy money

my parents love italy ( Tuscany mainly ) and they said they went to Naples airport when they went to Almafi and were terrified of stopping the hire care when driving through Naples , much less get out.

think i would rather try Bagdad.:rotfl: :rotfl:

that said i hated Florence with a passion for a lot of the same reasons but my parents love it , so Naples must be REALLY REALLY bad :rotfl: :rotfl:
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:
