Naples - HELP!!!

Can I put in a good word for Naples? I wouldn't want to drive there as it seems far more anarchic than most of Italy, but I stayed there a few years ago for 4 or 5 days and really enjoyed it. It hasn't got the charm of places like Sorrento but neither does it have their prices. I found it full of life and vibrancy and if you want to escape trains are cheap and efficient (if you can see through the graffiti windows) to take you off to all the other places along the coast.0

Really appreciating this advice! Really helping. I will def not bother with Naples… it was only the fact that to do 10days it looks easier to have 3 days there 7 somewhere else! Instead I will try find somewhere for 10days in Sorrento or surrounding area! – is Sorrento def the best?
Had a very quick look at that site you PM’d me… look good! Will have a proper look later… must say the apartments seem cheaper than when I stayed in Tuscany…. Mind you stayed in a fantastic little coastal place! Are the prices for eating and drinking out more expensive than in other parts of Italy? I found when in Rome/Tuscany for a meal you would pay say £35 for in uk you paid 35 euros (kinda saving a third of ya bill!)

naples is being slated here and its a shame because although i wouldnt want to holiday there it is certainly worth going for the day, especially market day as its very cheap. it is a major city and therefore will have the crime but its no worse than any major city here. i think it is being unfairly portrayed here. dont give it a miss altogether. i personally think sorrento is the best place as it has the most eating places etc and you could stay there for the full 10 days and have stuff to do everyday wheras the likes os amalfi and positano are lovely but not as big but are fab for a day visit although you will probably visit more than once as its so easy on the bus. deffo visit positano but be prepared for the big climb back up
there are buses again though. the food is probably around the same as you would pay here, maybe a little cheaper. the drink is cheaper but stay away from chaplins on the main street. its ok for a visit but dont get lured in for too long, luigi waters his drinks down but charges lots for them. there are loads of places and you wont get bored. it really is beautiful.

carol
ps check the offers on the website. they are offering free airport transfer so if you are unsure of the area which is understandable on a first visit it makes it much easier. we paid a fortune for the same transfers the first time we went but cancelled it for on the way back as we could get the bus direct for a few euros.0 -
Again to confirm Carol (I'm not stalking honest) do by all means visit Naples as it's a great place but I would do a day visit and stay somewhere like Sorrento. We ended up doing two trips to Naples as we wanted to visit the Museum, to find out when we got there it was closed on a Tuesday. Another good thing about the train is it stops right by Pompeii so if you fancy a trip, you can do it quite easily yourself instead of shelling out for an organised trip. We took our own food and drinks for the day, in true money saving style, so saved a bit of money there.
Go to Capri if you can and then get the bus upto Anacapri, gorgeous place and then be daring and go on the chair lift which goes up the side of the mountain, it has a bar at the top if you need a stiff drink after the adventure.ITV Winners Club #87 :eek:0 -

cannot quote it word for word but this is the general gist.
Terrible traffic , rubbish on the streets , beggars in every doorway, refused service in bars just cause english, tutted at in shops by staff, attempted mugging, smug and corrupt locals , and dirty+ smelly all floated by a sea of dodgy money
my parents love italy ( Tuscany mainly ) and they said they went to Naples airport when they went to Almafi and were terrified of stopping the hire care when driving through Naples , much less get out.
think i would rather try Bagdad.:rotfl: :rotfl:
that said i hated Florence with a passion for a lot of the same reasons but my parents love it , so Naples must be REALLY REALLY bad :rotfl: :rotfl:
I would appreciate a link to the Times article.
Only go into Naples Airport then travel south to our home town.
Easy to see some of Naples problems on the RAI channels.0 -
Found it !!!!!!!!

Nothing wrong with Naples, you'll get some of the best Italian food you've ever tasted. Yes - you need to keep your wits about you but no more than you would in London. If I was doing 10 days I'd spend three in Naples and the rest in Sorrento.0

that was my plan... but think i will look to try do sorrento for 10 days... visit naples for 1£2008 for 2008 club No. 286

We stopped at Naples as part of a cruise -and to confirm what others have said I was very shocked by the poverty. It was good for my 'spoilt' children to see how the other half live -there were little 'huts' at the side of the railway where families were living and the flats were worse than any ran down UK council estate we had ever seen. It was a bit of a shock....
Sorrento was lovely -a bit commercialised but very nice.
Make time to spend a day at Pompeii -fantastic and much bigger than you would imagine. Especially good if you have children, but the adults loved it too.
Have a great time -like the others have all said make time to see Naples, but maybe don't stay there. If you do go then hang on tightly to your purse....!
Have a great time
