I'm glad I presumably won't need those checks then, as I don't require any financial advice/mortgage/etc when buying my next house. <whew smilie>

Incorrect. The checks need to be carried out by an estate agent "before entering into a business relationship or occasional transaction with them [customer]"

Couple of things I thought mains water, electric and drainage are standard features in a town. Also it appears the kitchen only has a cooker and a sink so where do you store your food or put your washing machine?!

Having sold two properties within the last two years (May 2011 & Dec 2012) I can honestly state that on both occasions our EAs (different companies in different parts of the country) only requested our passports as proof of ID.

In the first case we were selling a mortgage-free house and buying another (a further different agent who again only asked to photocopy our passports) with the freed-up cash and in the second instance no property was being purchased with the proceeds from the sale....

.....and for that matter when we were buying our solicitor only wanted sight of the passports too :o

Sounds like our EA/sol need to read up on the required procedures, as long as they don't take a leaf out of the book of the dodgy EA on this thread ;)

It appears I've missed my chance as the auction has now closed.

I did a bit more reading after the link was posted and they like passports. They are basically looking to see that people are who they say they are and not hiding property behind shell companies and offshore accounts. My reading of the situation having read the doc is not that the EA is expected to profile fraudsters (which is a hard job, even for the Serious Fraud Office), rather that if someone is repeatedly sneaky about who they are and wanting to buy or sell, that's when you report them. Therefore a passport is as good an id as any.

Passport is the best ID they can get as it proves who you are, but really they should have also seen something with proof of address e.g. utility bill, bank statement, etc.
