I cant say I have ever dreamed or wanted to be a 3 garage family-is there something wrong with me........:D
sadly - yes there is, priorities are all Welsh
actually 6 garages are required for such as this and its stable mates...
which is partly why the previous listing for the flat iron French barn floats my boat - but to keep it as a barn not to convert it!
  • Now that's started off a new train of thought, ie "priorities are all Welsh"...

...anyone got any thoughts on different national priorities for housing?

I'll admit to astonishment at just how many people went "Aw! You're not ripping out the Rayburn are you?" when I moved here from England. Err...yes...I also couldn't wait to have standard plain modern ceilings.

I think possibly people place higher priority on accommodating their cars than I have been used to...or maybe that's because its a thought that rarely crosses my mind personally and everything else comes first?

Born & bred in Wales, and we have converted our garage into a room and heaven forbid, car & OH van sit on drive.
I do prefer older properties, like the one Linz posted a couple of posts back.
I also love old furniture-built to last!! I've had a massive pitch pine chest of drawers- in use everyday- in the bedroom for 32 years & some house moves, and it will outlive me. Before coming to live with me, I rescued it from a room over a stable-where it had been stored for many years.

Mum's way of thinking is "buy the best you can afford and make it last, no need to replace until it falls apart". Some of her clothes are 30+ years old.

Hence she would keep an old Aga/Rayburn if it still worked. Although having one of them in the house growing up-fed on coal and other bits of everything, she blames the Rayburn on her bad chest.

Not to offend anyone, so just speaking my my parents & widowed aunt, they are very "traditional".

Can't want to hear what LL has to say on the subject!!!!;)

Abandoning our Aga after next winter, as it seems kinda ridiculous to be opening doors in February to let the expensive heat out! :rotfl:

Houses in Scotland & Wales don't offend me as I have links with both countries, but old places tend to be dark, and very often badly built, so I leave their 'character' for others to enjoy. Besides, a few old, woodwormed beams and the price, metre for metre, goes up.

I would rather own an efficient, modern box and spend my time out of doors instead of fiddling around with maintenance.
I have some old furniture too though - a Welsh dresser 150 years old doesn't need any more looking-after than modern equivalents.

All I require is structural integrity, privacy, an acre or two of varied land, nice soil, total control over whatever sunshine is going, an independent water supply, basic shops within a mile, and preferably not over 125m above sea level.

Amazing how hard that is to find at under £300k these days, but it can be done. :D

  • At least your requirements can be met Dave.:rotfl:

    Mine boil down to:
    detached house in modern condition
    in attractive private area
    lots of nice countryside nearby
AND level of facilities I have been used to (ie those of a small city)
no traffic noise at all (road or air)
no dog noise (wouldn't have even considered that before moving...as it just didn't happen ever in my last location, so cant understand why it does here)
a low level of people around (yep...and all those facilities...:rotfl:)

Errrm...in other words..my total parcel of requirements is absolutely impossible to match I would think.. and its down to "What's the best overall package possible?"

The disparity between what you can get for your money in the UK compared to France is staggering.

On the one hand a tiny, grotty terrace with a damp bathroom in probably the worst bit of London

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-47020487.html

Or for the same price, a veritable mansion in France, with more things than you can shake an estate agent at....

Or this thing here which has loads of character but a mere 37 acre garden

Honestly, what am I doing here? Shouldnt I be running a B&B in France and making Calvados or something?

    Mine boil down to:
detached house in modern condition check, with lots of glass. But not overlooked.
in attractive private area check, overlooking private beach which has a sandy area and rocks. Oh, and needs to face East for sunrise and West for sunset :rotfl:. Actually could be done if stuck far enough out on a headland possibly . Or high enough up. But then would need a lift down to beach :D
lots of nice countryside nearby check
AND level of facilities I have been used to (ie those of a small city) check
no traffic noise at all (road or air) check
    no dog noise check
a low level of people around (yep...and all those facilities...:rotfl:) check - local shops, restaurants and bars plus public transport in walking distance
Mountains to the back or side.
Large garden with kitchen garden area and room for chickens :)
Errrm...in other words..my total parcel of requirements is absolutely impossible to match I would think.. and its down to "What's the best overall package possible?"
    You think YOU'RE fussy :rotfl:
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
