Didn't the article also say she was in "marketing"? Is the DM article because she has contacts to market her property? Not selling for ten years suggests they weren't that concerned but would have taken a good profit if they could.0 -

It didn't even cross our minds to check when we moved here but I expect any potential buyer would do so now.

Things are different now. In fact, now seems a great time to buy in Wales, whether from English or Welsh people, and most of those we dealt with were English by birth.
Slow broadband and duff mobile is a feature of many highly desirable coastal places, though there are often ways and means now with the application of £££. It's just a cost to be factored in, like the extra fuel for everyday activities for anyone living rurally.0 -

I would say "It depends on the house".
When I was looking I spotted one I knew would sell within weeks and it did and I missed it. I've seen others since..two I knew would sell within the normal few months I have been used to and they did.
I can only see one inexplicable "hanger on the market" and I think that's down to it having tenants in it (a fact that put me off it personally). Every house in normal modern condition goes in a normal timespan from what I can see. It's the ones in bad condition and/ or old-fashioned that hang on and hang on and hang on and I've certainly noticed quite a few of them around, but any I would buy do go okay in a reasonable time. I bought one "I wouldn't buy" in order to get one cheap enough for me in the event, because of the shortage of "ones I would buy" near here. The problem I found was finding many in standard/normal modern condition to even look at. Certainly, I would advise anyone trying to sell a house here to make sure the house is Standard Normal Modern if possible and then market it (just in case would-be buyers have heard how long it will take them to find workmen to do the work and get offput by that).
I don't know that exact area the £175,000 hanger-onner house is in, but its certainly nothing to do with the mobile/broadband reception I would say. More like, my guess is that its overpriced by somewhere between £30,000-£40,000. What photos I've seen of it show a house that looks reasonably modern and they have realised they would need to ensure normal kitchen and bathroom were there first, so that wont be the problem. In their position I would get satellite broadband up and running and reduce the price by £30k and then re-market.0 -

Generally speaking, I wasn't looking in the sub-£300k market. Property above £300k was extremely slow, and it remains lethargic.
Many people selling their Welsh Good Life Dream Home are seeking to return to England, where the bang for their buck is smaller, hence the reluctance to market realistically. Also there are the older ones, for whom it's all become a bit much, but their heart is only half in it when it comes to selling-up.
However, there are always distressed sales. I'm living in one. Not Wales but pretty similar! :rotfl:0 -
I wasn't aware of the "return to England" factor, though maybe you mean smallholding type houses (as in people in that type of house tend to want to downsize once they get older, so it may be that "GoodLifers" think "Well, if I cant have a smallholding and have to move anyway....then "whistles Simon & Garfunkel's Homeward Bound"). I have met an older incomer with smallholding that, sure 'nuff, plans on a return to England now he's too unfit for that lifestyle..so that may be a factor for others...
Don't know that that would apply to sub-£300k properties then? Or maybe its the case that English incomers I've met tend to be an agegroup that has retired here anyway and one of the factors for that will be being feeling too old to wait/hope any longer for a chance to buy a Good Enough House? and therefore came here to get it?
Been pondering your comment on "Now is a good time to buy in Wales" and wondering what your thinking is on that? Would be interested to know that please..(a lot of England now at risk of fracking was my first thought, followed by "If I lived in one of the bigger cities in England these days, with children young enough to be school age I would prefer Welsh schools too, particularly if any of those children were daughters, with all the Trojan Horse stuff we've been reading about recently").0
