Although I'm a man and these things are something of a mystery, I think the machine in the hallway may be what is known as a 'tumble drier.'

I believe people with wet and bouncy dogs use them.

Fair enough, then! I guess I'm not really in a position to comment either way as the washing machine in my flat sits outside the bathroom rather than being plumbed into the kitchen (ah, the joys of renting! ).
