Milk in a bag

Oh no... This is nothing new. Thirty - five years ago I lived for a while in Germany and we had milk in bags and no other realistic choice.
What an expletive pain that was. My most embarrassing moment in a supermarket was when I dropped a litre bag and got shouted at by the store cleaner.
Periodically one would puncture or leak, leading to hours washing out my shopping trolley, bags or the car. I try to be as green as I can, but this is not a good idea. When I returned to Germany in the early 90s milk in bags had disappeared and I was hugely relieved.
How typical for our stores to take up an idea that was dispensed with years ago elsewhere....Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I bought 2 bags of semi skimmed milk from Sainsbury's and got my free jug. Was pleased with how simple it was to use and liked fact it poured slower. First bag was fine but unfortunately second bag went off very quickly. We go thro a lot of milk and it wasn't out of date. Maybe was just unlucky but has put me off trying it again.0

I got some whilst on offer in Sainsburys, and I convinced my mum to get some too. She had difficulty popping the hole in the bag with the lid and ended up with milk everywhere. I got mine to keep in freezer in case I ran out of milk - I got one out to try but there must have been a small tear in the bag (probably me forcing it into a small space in the freezer) as when it defrosted and it leaked - luckily I had put it in a bowl to defrost so I caught the leaking milk, but it did mean I had to pour it into a proper jug instead.
They didn't work for me, but they did seem a good idea if you can get on with them. Thought they were a little expensive though at full price.0 -
I remember these from the 1970's in Scotland, the milkman started delivering milk in a kind of triangular shaped poly bag...The occassional wandering dog would pinch them from the doorsteps, wasnt long before they went back to glass bottles(then we only had to worry about the birds pecking through the foil to get to the cream on top.)Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

Thanks for all the tips in here, been noticing these more and more in supermarkets but with just me and the husbear I don't think it's worth it!
We have been buying Cravendale milk for Disney Cards & because I was sick of Morrisons milk going off after a few days! Now I am employed, lets get rid of this student debt!0 -
Those last few posts have underlined why polybags of milk are such a bad idea. No matter how cheap they are, I have another reason for not buying them.
I wasted enormous amounts of ordinary milk due to my son's habit of leaving milk out in the kitchen (the fridge is under the stairs; it's a small kitchen). Cravendale milk can safely be left out for a few hours without going off. I now spend much less on milk than I used to. I can remember that the German milk in bags went off very quickly - the large milk jug was a real pain to store!Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... well I've only started trying the milk in a bag in the last few weeks because the Sainsburys offer was highlighted here and I'm a big fan. I like the way it pours and I feel as if I am supporting the cause for less packaging. But I'm not going to buy it if its more expensive - I've only tried it on offer because it matches the prices I pay in Aldi's or Iceland for 4 pints. If they bring down the price regularly I will choose it over the bottles in those 2 shops, but till then... my pocket comes first, I've still a fair few pounds owing which need to be paid off before I can put the environment first0
