Well I too joined the great Wii hunt a few weeks ago and realised that there was a UK shortage. I checked this site and used the link quoted above. I then thought that the shortage did not exist as this link always showed Wii's in stock. The problem was, I work shifts and was checking before or after work! Usually between 5am and 7am, when stock lists must have been added or updated, this was mainly Dixons, John Lewis, Game and Amazon.
I ordered my £179 Wii from Amazon and it was delivered a few days later.
Maybe I hit a lucky streak and found plenty of availability during the early hours, or maybe theres something in checking stock early in the day!
Just a thought to help you Wii hunters, give the early hours a go but don't have a go for your lack of sleep if Im wrong, I'm only trying to help!

plus if anyone lives near a game store, they get deliveries on a tuesday and a thursday (or so it is in N.Ireland).
According to a manager, they will be getting them right up to christmas, but its first come first served.

Gamestation had 3 in stock when I went in , 2 in argos and 1 was in comet (but was a bundle deal).

I think the wii-console update thing is a good way of looking, just keep the site open and it updates when stock comes in.

Better be quick at woolworths, they are only letting you order them in a bundle with either mario party 8 or ratatouille....have ordered with them before and my order was cancelled so i don't hold out much hope...worth a try i spose...
