:)I think it depends on the car that you are driving - I am over 60 and drive a Subaru Impreza Turbo. General quotes were £600 to £800 but Saga came up with £370!

You must be careful about having young named drivers on the Policy - they will tend to base the quote on them.

We were previously insured with RIAS which is for the over 50's. I had a flyer from Berry Birch and Noble and got exactly the same cover for buildings and contents and saved £72. Worth rining especcially as it is a free call. Very helpful on the phone.

my bark is worse than my bite!!!!!!!!
  • OK, I know it's not unique to SAGA, but when I tried them for Car Insurance I answered all their questions then got to the bit about adding my daughter on the Insurance, who has a Provisional License, and they didn't want to know.

Then recently tried them for House Insurance, again answered all their questions, until the one about "Subsidence" (which we had over 15 years ago) ... again they didn't want to know.
It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!
  • Not just for the over 50's..........My hubbie insures his car and our home contents with Norwich Union Direct and because he has at least 2 policies with them we get RAC Protection Plus Breakdown Recovery with Personal Cover thrown in at a much reduced rate.........and the policy premiums were the cheapest we could find phoning around and smurfing the wonderful web wonderland.........XXX

Egg are offering £50 cashback when Egg Savings or Egg Card customers take out their motor insurance. Plus, if you pay in full with with your Egg Card, you'll get 0% for 12 months on your premium. And you'll get a 10% discount for buying online.

I've just tried them and they were very competitive even before the £50 cashback. My renewal for Direct Line (always very competitive) was due last week - £265. For the same cover Egg quoted £243 and then there's the £50 cashback. The Egg policy is a little better because it provides for a courtesy car when yours is being fixed - DL don't. And business use is included at no extra charge.

I was very impressed with the online quotation process - no problem including details of previous claims/convictions - and no need to speak to anyone.

Even if your insurance is not yet due for renewal yet, it may be worth getting a quote - many insurers will give you a pro-rata refund if you cancel during the year.

£70 saved for a few minutes work - I'm not sure if my being over 50 made much difference.

If you want to tweak this loophole a little more and you haven't already got an Egg Card, you can get an extra £5 cashback for a successful application. Details here.

'When searching for a buildings/contents quote for an elderly relative I was surprised to see the dearest quote was from SAGA '

Not surprised. Unless you are absolutely minimal risk SAGA is a very expensive broker (and travel agent etc.)

I'd like to know how it got it's image. One bloke who has made lots of money and is now going to make pots more by floating . Just marketing hype.

Good at taking money, bad at paying out. I,ve got a very small domestic claim (first in 28 years and less than an annual contents premium)...3 times we have contacted them without any reponse.

Also one of those companies very fond of making super profits from expensive 0870 numbers.

  • Hi Fastflys.

Re motor Insurance for over 50's.Try Toyota Insurance, I have just saved over £350 insuring a BMW320i SE previously with Age Concern. Importantly, they will continue insuring to age 101!

    Best of luck, scarsdale
  • I had buildings and contents insurance with More Than.
I changed to RIAS and got loads more cover (£400k for Buildings and £50k for contents) and saved over £150! :D

I got a quote off the website http://www.rias.co.uk it took a few days, but I was more than happy with the outcome!

They are a specialist for the over 50's, and will only insure low risks. They won a Consumer Finance award from the Guardian Newspaper, and were reccommended by Which.
