They once said on a property show I was watching it devalued homes by around 10%. But like others have said, it could devalue it by 100% if no one puts an offer in if it stinks.

There really is something very low class about people who smoke indoors these days. Any smoker I know goes and stands outside rather than stink the place out for other residents and visitors.

I would be wary of buying a smoky house or flat. What other odours are being disguised?

We bought from a dog owner. It would have been nice to get a bit of money off due to all the nasty hairs everywhere (still don't like walking barefoot on the carpet 7 weeks in) but the cleanliness is about 0.001% of the appeal of a property, because it can be cleaned, but you can't change the size/location etc that matter so much more. Smoking might be a little bit different as it does soak into the surroundings and probably represents a minor health hazard, at least for a while.

Yes seriously, it stinks and would cut my life expectancy.

    No it wouldn't

Depends on how hot it is.

If it's cold weather it could be weeks.

I can't really see the problem myself. It's mostly a problem with soft furnishings, and you're unlikely to buy a house with sofas included. Curtains can be cleaned, and cleaning a house isn't that big a deal. I certainly can't see why you'd need a new kitchen?

My grandfather was a very, very heavy smoker, and I always noticed the smell in my grandparents' house when we visited them. After he died, within a few weeks there was no smell any more - my grandmother dealt with the initial shock of widowhood by giving the place a "bottoming" as she called it.

Replacing carpets and painting every room could cost a lot though.

I’m always surprised that people put so much say on the carpets and curtains now. The last time I moved was about 25 years ago and carpets and curtain were not normally consider part of the purchase price they might have been used in negations. With the lack of good property on the market now I would have thought it was hard enough to find a house you like let alone one with carpets and curtains to your taste.
