  • What about dog odour discount? It never fails to amuse me when dog owners swear blind that there house certainly does not smell of dog because they clean religiously, and anyway such and such told them it always smells lovely. Nope, sorry, I'm afraid it proper honks.

Yes, dogs are smelly beasts. How do you feel about cats? I'm very biased, but for all their failings I can't usually smell them (even if they do shed and like attacking me!)
  • I'm fine with cats as they generally (depending on the cleanliness of the owner) do not smell. Even better if there's no litter tray or similar about!

The difference between smokers and dogs (apart from the fact that I prefer the smell of smoke to dog) is that the chemicals from smoking can soak into the decor and are harder to remove than dog hair. It is not necessarily just a bit of a clean and the once over with a tin of paint - paint the ceiling with cheap white paint and the tar will soon start seeping through again. It needs a major league industrial deep clean followed by redecorating with some good quality paint but then the house is pretty much good as new.

So in answer to the original question, not so much a % but the cost of seriously cleaning the place and redecorating throughout.

With cleaning products and paint fumes that are probably even more detrimental to my health than stale smoke!

It wouldn't need an industrial clean, just wash down with sugar soap first.
Dogs are far smellier than smokers. With their hair and wee and stuff. Now don't get me wrong smoking stinks, but I'd rather buy a smokers house than a pet owners house or an old persons (I mean died in) house.

I went to look at a flat once that stunk of smoke. The EA told me there was an 'unlicenced' late night drinking establishment in the basement. Some kind of poker club I think. He was sure it would soon be closed down by the council... sure sure...

    I didn't buy it!

But, while I hate the smell of smoke, I think it can be easily cleared out in a few weeks. Cleaning, cleaning, painting and replacing furnishings does enough I think. Certainly if I was getting a big discount!

They don't give off toxic and obnoxious fumes the minute they kick the bucket ;)

I'd rather buy a house that smelt of smoke than buy a house with bad neighbours for sure.

I can't stand the smell of smoke and would never buy a smoker's house. I am seeing some good houses at good prices but wondering if they all belong to smokers.

It will probably devalue it about as much as not having cut the grass for a week.

What if they have a couple of dogs and smoke.
