Thank you so much for all your replies - I took 2 nurofen @ 7am this morning and haven't had any more painkillers since, and I'm not actually sure I can make it to drive home, I'm in so much agony, but I'm glad to read that I'm not exagerating the pain, and that others know what I'm going through. I'm going to call the doctors and get an appointment, and ask to see an ENT specialist as this is grippling me and I'm going to have to leave work in a minute, which is crap as I'm a temp so I won't get paid! But I appreciate everyone's responses, I've taken down what you've all said and will go to the pharamacy on the way home and get psedoephedrine as recommended, and I've never thought about an allergy, although scarily this has only started since I moved house in December.......

I really appreciate your advice, thanks so much, off home now to try and rest a bit - it's totally debilitating, isn't it.

Steam inhalations several times a day and see if you can add lavender oil or olbas oil or old fashioned Friar's balsam if it is still available. These are menthol type crystals which really work in clearing your sinuses. I have suffered sinusitis for years and found giving up dairy products helped me a lot.

I managed to get a doctor's appointment and the only thing he would give me was co-proxomol - 100 of them, it's a good job I'm not feeling depressed! Amazingly I took two at about 3.30 and I'm feeling absolutely fine - just a very slight pain when I bend forward above my left eye. What I am interested in is the link a couple of posters have mentioned about giving up dairy products, I'm going to research that a bit more, and also look into hopi ear candling as I've never even heard of it! Thanks again for all responses, it's amazing how many people seem to have suffered from sinusitis, even from speaking to a couple of people at work they knew someone who suffered.

Even though the pain has improved with the painkillers, I wouldn't stop the inhalations! That gunk is still up there, y'know ...
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • i suffered from this for a few years and the medication i was given i had an allergic reation too so don't want to try any other tablets
the best thing for me is the crystals you get from the chemist to dissolve in hot water and inhale over a towel
it is best to use them straight away to get the best results
this clears it for a while and you do this several times while the sinus is infected
only other remedy i know is to have the operaton which i have heard is good but can reoccur
i also use vapour rub on my pillow and chest if i have a cold to try to stop it getting worse and affecting my sinus
things i avoid are heavy perfumes/sprays/lilies etc which also trigger it off

I used to suffer really badly (probably because i smoked then), then didnt have an attack for years, but just had the worst attack ever at christmas, it peaked last friday which was also my wedding anniversary (i spent the day crying with pain, it was that bad), but it eased off after that, and ive just got toothache and bunged up with mucus now. Couldnt smell or taste for a week and a half either. Im making up for all the christmas eating now-oops!

But i read somewhere once that banning sugar and dairy products once an attack starts helps, so i tried it, and it does work. Is very hard to stick to, but worth it.

I smoke, so i guess the answer is staring me in the face then! I also noticed then evening when walking the dog that as I was walking into the wind the left side of my face, where the pain is, started to throb again. I'm about to start a really healthy eating plan anyway, so am going to look into cutting out dairy, and I'm still worried about the fact all the gunk is still there, it's just being numbed by painkillers! Had another inhallation tonight, in fact I'm having them every night and they really do seem to be working, I just need to get rid of all the "snot" for want of a better word!
