HTC Phone Storage Lack Of Problem

  • You won't get Gingerbread on the Original Desire. Nobody will. You can download a final version on HTC's developer downloads section but it warns you this is a final version, is for experienced users and may not work correct.

It's RTM. Like I said, it's now down to the carriers. It could take years though. Some of the stock apps are removed to allow the new version of sense and for the update to function at it's optimum

I never said to get the one on HTC developer... That's for developers, believe it or not! That's just the basic image of the ROM with no optimisation for the carriers variations.

However he does have a point in that there isn't an OTA for unbranded phones and from the sounds of it, there doesn't look like there will be one. It doesn't seem likely that carriers will bother (mine probably won't, anyway).

There is plenty of life left in the Desire yet!. I have done the following to my phone:

    1) Root (unrevoked.com)
    2) S-Off (alpharev.nl)
    3) Flash new Hboot - this is the partition table that splits up the internal storage giving you more for your apps, recommended one is the CM7r2 one (alpharev.nl)
    4) Flash a new custom ROM Oxygen 2.2 is the one I use daily (forum.oxygen.im)

This leaves your phone with the latest Pure Gingerbread (Android 2.3.5), no HTC Sense Bloatware and around 300Mb free for applications

NOTE: THE ABOVE PROCESSES ARE NOT WITHOUT RISK TO YOUR PHONE. YOU SHOULD READ AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE AND MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION AS TO WHETHER YOU WISH TO PROCEED. SOME OF THE ABOVE PROCESSES COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE.

PS. If E-Mail is a major problem for you when you run out of storage, install K9-Mail, this has the option to move the mailbox storage to the SD Card which means you should still get mail when out of internal storage.

A couple of things I want to point out - for one, the CM partition table is ONLY for "Stock" android ROMs. This means it will look nothing like the original desire (which has what's called "Sense" running on top of it), it'll look and act a bit more like a Nexus ONE. Now This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it can be quite a shock if you don't expect it.
Secondly, 3 of the 4 things listed here will require completely wiping the phone and starting over. Now, there are ways to backup things like your contacts, apps, etc. but it's not for the feint of heart.
Finally, the problem with email isn't due to running out of space for the emails themselves, it's that when the system drops below a certain threshold of free space (when you get the warning), ALL SYNCING IS STOPPED. Not just for official apps, but for EVERYTHING until more space is freed. This means that another email client won't necessarily solve the problem as the OS itself prevents syncing.

All in all, though, I've pretty much done the same as the above poster and am much happier with my device for it, but I am technically minded and through the course of this lost data here and there, so beware. If you JUST need some extra space, rooting and installing apps2sd is by far the easiest way.

Agreed, you need to FULLY understand the processes and end result before you start but worth it in the end.

Actually the upgrade is a piece of cake - download the program from the HTC website and run it - less than 5 minutes to upgrade the phone. Just plug it in with the usb cable. I did it yesterday morning and it's a fair improvement. The disclaimer about sms etc. is for Germany and North America; I'm in the UK and it has all the UK operator settings built in so you don't have to change anything.

More space, the clock now flips (pure eyecandy but nice anyway). There is now smoother scrolling, slightly faster page transitions, better power management, faster shut down/startup, new icons.

And the big benefit is that it debrands and unlocks your phone without having to root or do anything technical. I'm pleasantly surprised and would recommend it to anyone non-technical.
