HTC Phone Storage Lack Of Problem
Hi, I have HTC Desire and keep getting phone storage low message and this stops me getting emails, texts etc so is really annoying.
I have moved all the apps i can to the SD card, deleted texts, cleared internet history etc etc.
Anyone know of a cure? I assume it will mean being able to move apps to SD card.
I know you can do this if you root the phone but i really don't want to do this.
Thanks for reading, hope you can help!

I have the same phone, so I know exactly what you mean.
Unfortunately, the Desire has only a piddly amount of internal memory. The internal 512Mb is split so that you only have about 150Mb for your apps and such and a lot of this will be taken up by existing apps on the hpone.
Even worse, a lot of apps gradually take up more and more space as they store data and most of this data won't get moved to the SD card, no matter what options you select.
I know that you really don't want to root your phone, but if you're genuinely sick of dealing with this issue, it's the best way to do it. Rooting these days is not difficult or time consuming, even if you take your time with it, you can be done in 20-30minutes (and most of that is waiting for your SD card to be partitioned).0 -
The new update is out and about. Memory management is a major thing in the gingerbread update. Have a look around to see if it's been released on UK carriers yet0

Thanks, just found this guide, which looks pretty comprehensive. Just in case anyone else needs:

try backing up your phone with Mybackup or other and then reset to factory defaults, after restore I found a lot of junk went and had more mem available. Would love Gingerbread but not sure we will get it with tmobile.0

If you go down the rooting option there is no need for the fiddly version using SD card.
Use Unrevoked as its easy: http://unrevoked.com/0 -

Absolutely, this is the way to do it. The thing is, after you have rooted your phone, you're going to want to use that to your advantage. There is a thing called apps2SD which has nothing to do with the "Move to SD" function you find in your menus. This uses a separate partition on your SD card to transparently increase your phone's internal memory. This is by far the best way to handle the problem, as you can go from 150Mb of usable data space to whatever you like. I have a 16G SD card and I allocated 1Gb to A2SD, haven't seen a low storage message yet. However, you can use as little as 512Mb and see a substantial gain. Remember, an extra 512Mb isn't doubling your phone's memory, it's quadrupling it because you normally only have 150Mb for apps.0 -

You won't get Gingerbread on the Original Desire. Nobody will. You can download a final version on HTC's developer downloads section but it warns you this is a final version, is for experienced users and may not work correct.0 -

No, despite the name it is a completely different device. You'll want to use this instead - http://revolutionary.io/
Please read all documentation associated with it, first!flyingscotno1 wrote: »You won't get Gingerbread on the Original Desire. Nobody will. That's not entirely true. The update works and it works just fine, it's just rather not worth the effort since there's little benefit and it's a lot of hassle.
However, this is only really true for official ROMs from HTC. There are a number of unofficial ROMs out there for the Desire that quite comfortably give you Gingerbread (With thanks to the same SD card jiggery-pokery that gives you extra space for apps) and yet let you keep all the Sense goodness that you're used to. It's a little bit more involved than rooting the phone, but well worth the effort.0 -
