MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should Richard have a ring of truth?

The wealth of the cousins is irrelevent. As the ring was taken as a keepsake then he should give it to his daughter and it should never be sold. Richard should tell his cousins that the ring is valuable but that he doesn't intend to benefit financially from it. If they can't accept that then the value of all the keepsakes would have to be taken into account.0

It looks to me as if the estate has already been shared out equally, and that the family's choosing of mementoes was the next stage in the process. Richard didn't choose the ring because he knew its value, but as a keepsake for his daughter. He has lucked out and should keep quiet, and keep the ring.0

Well, as the other beneficiaries had the chance of the riing, I feel that Richard has every right to keep the cash0

the ring should be kept as a family heirloom. (insured for the full value of course;))Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

Firstly sorry about your Grandma's death. I presume you took the ring to give to your daughter for sentimental reasons and not because you thought if might be worth anything. People would only gainn financially if you sold the ring and split the proceeds it would cause a lot of heartache if the ring has sentimental value no price can be put on that.
If you told the rest of the family of the true value it is bound to cause ill- feeling with someone thinking you knew the value and that is why you took it.
Tell you daughter to look after the ring and pass it to her daughter when the time is right I am sure that is what your Grandma would want.0 -
The Ring is part of the Mementos that all the family took to remember Grandma after the Estate was sorted.
The true value was not known or sort after.
Therefore I believe it is theirs to keep. Once in their ownership, if they then choose to sell it - that is up to them, it's theirs.

I believe that in this day and age to much emphasis is placed on materialistic objectives when loyalty, honour and integrity should prevail. (unless you are a politician)
Too many people use the excuse well everybody else does it but that does not make it right and you are not everybody.
Also we teach our children by example.
Remember we always regret the things we should have done.
What ever choice you make, you not anybody esle has to live with that decision.
Be brave, choose wisely and have a excellent 20070 -
I don't really see a problem here. Richard took the ring as a memento for his daughter and knew nothing about the value at the time, so he should keep it for her.0

Hmmm, I'm going to play Devils Advocate here
If it were me, I'd be in two minds about this.
There would be the moralistic side of me:
I'd want to do what's right and fair and sell the ring and share the proceeds. I'd feel guilty about having the ring or proceeds to myself.
The "in debt and needing money" side of me:
I'd sell the ring myself and pay off my debts!0 -
...I'm just desperately worried about the Tax Man here....
....if the ring wasn't included in the final valuation of the Estate he obviously isn't going to receive his fair share...:EasterBun
