If the will stated that all Gran's assets were to be divided equally then he has stolen the ring from the estate. The executors could be liable for any future complaint.

If you mean 'should Richard keep quiet or sell the ring and share the proceedings with his cousins' then I would say that he should say nothing. All the cousins had the chance to select a piece to remember their family member by and they might have selected something which turns out to be more valuable than Richards. Would he expect them to sell and share the proceedings? I hope not.

If you mean 'should Richard keep quiet or sell the ring and share the proceedings with his daughter' then he should keep quiet and do the honourable thing by carrying out his intenion which was to pass it down to the next generation.

Keep the ring....each cousin had an equal opportunity to choose mementos and Richard seems to have struck it lucky; bear in mind that any of the other cousins' chosen mementos might turn out to be more valuable than their first appearance hinted at.:beer:

Surely it depends on what the other cousins took and whether he plans to sell the ring or give it to his daughter as planned. Personally I would keep hold of it and give it to my daughter when she is old enough to value it (excuse the pun) properly after all its not for sale richard wont be making money out of it otherwise he shoud declare it

If the cousins got there first and took what they wanted, leaving the ring, they obviously weren't interested.

If Richard was first then well done my son! You picked what you thought was a piece of costume jewellery that turned out to be the real McCoy. Good on you for obtaining a nice little inheritance for your daughter.

Either way, keep it and say a thank you to your Granny ('cause she's probably up there smilin') and nothing to anyone else.

Let him keep the ring! If the cousins had only agreed to share the proceeds of the house but not the contents then nobody can complain about the rings worth. He obviously wasn't taking the ring to make a profit from it but to give to his daughter either for a keepsake or perhaps a future wedding ring.

I am rather surprised at the amount of answers that say keep quiet and keep the ring.
That is plainly very dishonest,he should speak with the other benefacters and they should all decide what they want to do.
What has happened to peoples morals today,? that is the problem isn't it?
