should people know better?

don't know if this is the correct category, or even if there is one for this subject, but i just had to get this off my chest!

Was in a well known shop the other day and was behind a woman at the returns counter. this lady was with two kids, and was returning a pair of trainers she bought as a christmas present for her lad. The problem was that they didn't fit, though there was actually nothing wrong with the trainers.

The shop has a policy stated "Refunds are only given for goods that do not comply with the Sale of Goods Act. All other refunds are at the discretion of the store manager".

Now the manager refused to give a cash refund, but instead offered a replacement pair of the trainers or a credit voucher. There were no other shoes that the kid liked that fitted (the ones he wanted were out of stock and the manager offered to call her once they had some back in, and the mother refused to take a credit note stating that they are illegal. She also did not want to come back when more stock was in because of teh cost of travel). Eventually, after my intervention (got fed up waiting) she went off calling the store "robbers" etc.

I really cannot believe some people and the way they behave. It would have been nice of the store manager to give a cash refund but why should he? He offered everything else and seemed very reasonable to me. customers like that lady make my blood boil as much as shops that give crap service.

There!
Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!

Can't comment on this case as I don't know the specifics but there seems to be more and more of a professional complainer/demand compensation attitude for any slight developing, regardless of whose fault it is, get it off the one that has most money. Hearing more cases of people not taking the trouble to find things out about replacements beforehand and assuming the shop will take responsibility - personally when buying anything for my wife or mother, my first question before confirming purchase is to ask about refund policy in the event of taste or size issues.:D

I had one today (also, ironically in a "sports" shop!).

The man in front was adamant that the law stated that as he paid by credit card, he was legally entitled to a cash refund. (ha!!)

The manager scribbled a number on a piece of paper and told him to give the Trading Standards people a call and see what they suggest, whilst reminding him that there were only 9 days left under the companys exchange policy for him to come back.

The man left the shop yelling about everyone being a bunch of a-holes and theiving b'stewards. He was adamant his solicitor would be in-touch.

I had to explain the rules to my kids while I laughed my head off (after he left though!)

I was in currys digital shop when the foreign lady returned a digital camera saying it was faulty the pictures were terrible, she had bought it last week, rant, rant, she wanted a full refund, more ranting.
When she stopped to breath for a sec, the lady got her reciept out and it was clear she had bought it in October, 7 weeks before!!!
Still more ranting, the battery was low that is why the photos were not so clear and bright, I bought it last week.
I waited for so long because it was hilarious to listen to this woman going mental when even she must have known it was a lost case!!!!
I left before it was finished xxxx

Some people believe if you cause enough fuss you will get your own way,but I think many stores are hardening their attitude.

    It never works though!

I work in retail and the more people argue or are nasty the less you do for them, they just become a joke.

I've just been reading a business eBook but it reminds me of this thread. Here's a short quote

"In fact, most psychologists now agree that a high emotional IQ is even more important than being flat out smart. Why? Because if a person has no emotional balance and stability in his or her own life, they will often sabotage their own efforts and accomplishments with bad behavior, depression, neurotic decision making or some other emotional problem. Indeed a person with average intelligence or who is emotionally stable is more likely to achieve success than a genius with emotional problems"

Basically people like the ones quoted above are completely unstable.
  • I used to work for uite a few retail stores on the high street and if a customer really peed thestaf off we used to cram there goods in to a small bag or give a huge bag for a small purchase.

If they were really rude we would partially (sp?) split the handel.

I know this is childish but shop assitants are there to help and the more you rant at them and swear at them the les help you can expect.

I do hate shops that do not train staff properly in their policies.

A couple of years ago I bought something in Debenhams for my MIL Christmas. I asked if she could exchange it with the receipt after Christmas but outside the 30 days ( I bought in Nov) and was told yes no problem. When MIL took it back at end of December they refused as it had now gone into the sale (but they didn't have any in any size or colour!) and she could only have the reduced price as an exchange even though she had the receipt showing the full value as it was outside 30 days. I don't mind the policy but I wish the shop assistant had answered me correctly when I asked.

This year when I bought stuff I asked for gift receipts. Sales assistant forgot to do them and said she would just write on the receipt that she had forgotton. I refused to accept this as I couldn't prove she had written it so she had to refund the lot and put through again.

Oh dear..I dont think someone who loses their temper a bit in a shop (wrongly probably) is unstable..save us from innapropriate quotes, particularly from psychologists.
