Memory Foam or traditional mattress?

  • Ok, we've been out testing mattresses all afternoon....I like the feel of memory foam mattresses, however my wife doesn't. She has a point....there's no doubting their comfort - but if you lie still for 2 mins it moulds around you, effetively putting you in your own little 'valley'.....this makes turning over a lot harder (compounded by the fact that they don't give you a 'spring rebound' effect of a traditional mattress as you turn either...therefore even more effort).

The silver lining to this is that if you have one partner who's a lot heavier than the other, when they turn over, the lighter person isn't bounced up and down like a toy!!! Also, since we got ours, I find I seem to lie in one position for most of the night. The extreme comfort means I don't need to twist and turn.
Another vote for memory foam (ours is a Komfi full mattress).
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

Sorry PNEfan to hear John Lewis let you down. Our Cavendish KS arrived as promised last Saturday and this week we have had the best nights sleep for years. Cannot rate it too highly. Most surprised that JL have let you down like that. Is it worth trying to see of the local store will deliver one for you on price match against the online plus Quidco discount? Believe me it is woth pursueing.

We bought a Sealy Windermere bed - it has a sprung mattress and a memory foam topper attached. Its wonderful! Really comfortable and supportive, although it took a couple of days to get used to it. I have noticed that its warmer than a traditional bed but I'm a chilly person anyway so I love it! Maybe not for everyone but my achey back has improved considerably.
We paid £750 for it in the sales, its king size and has 4 drawers underneath.

I don't like memory foam. I think they are way over priced. I bought a Seally "Posturepeadic super lux millionaires". Shop around as most shops have a sale and Money Savers can generally negotiate a further reduction, but this will finish at the end of the month.

What suits one does not necessarily suit another so make sure you go try several before you buy.

  • We got a memory foam mattress when we moved house a few years ago. It is VERY comfortable. But just as a warning I find it very hot. Even though we live in an old house which does get cold at night we're still using a 4.5 tog quilt and waking up too hot. It is more difficult in summer and I'm still looking for the perfect light blanket for that time of year. So budget in that you might have to buy a new quilt.

Guess it does save on heating though :)

Contacted local JL stores who couldn't have been more helpful and apologetic about our treatment by JL online. Upshot is we're getting a different (similar) mattress delivered next Thurs and they're price matching the Cavendish one (except for Quidco discount). JL online offered a paltry £15 compensation.

Think the lesson is to buy via stores rather than online. Ironically I received an email questionnaire about my recent purchase. Hmm ... don't think they'll be v pleased with the feedback.

Can't wait for mattress to arrive! Glad you're so pleased with yours maple41.
  • Hi all,

Thanks again for all your replies. I have been so busy I haven't even been to test any mattresses yet! I am a bit worried about the full memory foam mattress as my husband gets really hot and sweats loads (sorry DH!) in our bed at the moment, so I'm sure he will be just as bad on a memory foam bed.

Being a good moneysaver, I am considering investing a memory foam mattress topper and pillows. I have seen a bargain in a local store (don't know how good it is though - it feels lovely, very heavy with a soft cover - so I'm hoping it will be fine!) where they are selling the double size for £50 and pillows at 2 for £16. Sorry I can't think of the shops name -its a new one - but I'll let you know when I've been back.

If DH doesn't get on with it - I'll have to pass the topper on to my DD (maybe I could chop it in half for two single beds! - sorry just thinking aloud!) and we won't have lost too much, but then I'll know if its for us and we can get a new bed if it is.

I would never have known about the heat thing without your replies - so thanks again guys. :A

I'll let you know how I get on. Or do some of you think I should wait and pay more - I know a lot of the time you get what you pay for.

PNEfan and everyone - hope you have some lovely nights sleep in your new beds. ;)

£50 is a very good price for a memory foam topper. If your OH doesn't like the topper, you can always double it over, and have twice the thickness for yourself = bliss.
One thing to watch out for with memory and reflex together mattresses, is that you have a job getting out of them if you are on the heavy side.
  • I've had my first nights sleep on memory foam - it was lovely and I didn't want to get up this morning.

The shop was B & M Bargains (west bromwich, west mids) Don't know if this is a chain of shops though. After buying it I noticed Netto are going to be selling memory foam toppers on Thursday for only £39.99! Good offer if you can get one.

We didn't buy pillows - they felt hard but we're happy with the mattress.

    Thanks all xxx

  • I'm not too sure this is such a good combination (springs with memory foam).

First of all, memory foam has no spring-back, meaning it doesn't push back against you when you lie on it like traditional spring mattresses do. With those, your blood vessels are caught between your own gravity pulling down and the force the mattress pushes back against you.

This is because of its open cell structure (when you lie on it, the air pressure is spread to adjoining cells until pushed out from the mattress altogether so no air pressure is left to push against you). The benefit is pressure-relief.

Now, when you place a memory foam topper on a spring mattress, which HAS a strong spring-back force, part of that force is transmitted right through the topper and it sort of cancels part of its benefit.

I'd never buy a memory foam mattress which has springs in it. The best combination is a memory foam layer on top with a firm foam base underneath!
