I got a recommendation from someone on here for IKEA beds as they are of very high quality and recommended by the chiroractic association (oh and very very cheap!!).

Am going to drive up to the Bristol branch and try them out soon!
Just be careful with Ikea beds as they are European sizes and not the UK sizes we are used to here (although the in-store muppets will tell you that they are the same as UK sizes  ). If you use fitted sheets then the chances are that your existing ones won't fit. Size comparison here:

  • we just had delivery of our king size pocket sprung divan with pillow top. I slept in one of these in america and they feel real luxury.
  • Thanks for your help, guys. I don't feel much wiser though. Its obviously each to their own, some like, some don't. I will check them out but keep saving in the meantime.

Any more thoughts on the 'best bed' subject greatly appreciated.

    Thanks BB xx

There is now an option with memory foam that doesn't throw the heat back as it used to http://www.furmanac.co.uk, they do electric beds, and are trade, but they do the newer foam. They can put you in touch with anyone in your area that sells them.
  • I bought a memory foam divan double bed last Jan with 1 1/2 drawers either side, so you can put bedside table in front and 1/2 drawer still opens - it is a MYERS memory foam mattress and my goodness it is great. Had a lovely year's sleep and would highly recommend it. Mine cost £500. I considered the Tempur mattress and their space age sleep but since I am on earth and only had £500 to spend like you - I opted for memory foam - I got mine from a local bed business man and delivered free - the same bed was in Argos and Helibeds for £50 more - (last jan prices).

Ooooh, have to agree with that. We experienced pillow top mattresses on a holiday down under, absolute bliss. I wanted to bring it home but it exceeded the weight limit :rotfl:

We tried out a memory foam mattress in a store but didn't like the delayed sinking feeling.

Best thing to do is go into a specialist bedding store/department and try out the different mattresses and see which you like best.

We've always had a firm Dunlopillo and prefer them to sprung mattresses but if I wanted to replace my bed now I would be hard pushed to choose between another Dunlopillo and a pillow top.

I bought an orthopedic matress a while ago as I had a bad back. While the matress helped it wasn't the most comfortable thing to sleep on. I had a word with my chiropracter and he said a lot of his patients that had purchased a memory foam matress found it very hot. I decided to keep the matress and bought a 3" topper instead and it is really great.
I still have the firmness of the matress but a really comfortable layer on top. One advantage of the topper is that it can be removed from the bed and aired if you do get too hot. It's really heavy and I'm sure I would put my back out if I tried to move a whole matress of memory foam. As yet though I've not found the topper too hot. I got mine through the following

I also got one of the pillows and the travel mat, both of which have improved my sleeping as well.
    hope this helps
