Memory Foam or traditional mattress?

  • I for one ummmed and argghhhed for a long time about buying a memory mattress. It seemed a lot of money for a chunk of foam, but having suffered sleepless nights and back/neck trouble for many years I took the plunge.

Looked at a lot of websites, but the most responsive to my questions was Mark at http://www.memory-mattress.co.uk/index.html - he answered everything and I ordered Wednesday, arrived 9.10am Thursday.

I order the 20cm double, with 7cm of memory foam, it came vacuum packed in a roll, along with a separate box containing two memory foam pillows. Opened up and left for a few hours (allow up to 12) for it to expand.

It is wonderful, very supportive, not too soft and very very comfortable. I awoke this morning and my back does feel a lot more rested.

One tip, it is a bit smelly. This smell does go off, but I found sleeping with the window open all night for that first night helps. I expect that by tonight it will have fully aired.

So highly recommended this one, oh and the mattress cover is nice and soft too.

  • From watching qvc it appears to me that yourbetter of buying topper as supposedly the builty in memory matresses only have a very small thickness of the foam, where as if you get the topper your getting alot more foam, combine that with a good quaklity new mattress and yourl prob be saving.

I've got a sealy memory foam mattress topper, sprung base, king size.
    & it's fab:beer:

I think it was about £800 (ish).

I don't think much of silentnight beds, bought a single sprung base for my daughter, had to replace it within two years. To be honest needed replacing sooner.

I bought a 2" memory foam mattress topper from ebay a few months ago and it is FANTASTIC !!!!!! my backache has dissapeared and my sleeping has improved. A very big YES for memory foam, i cant imagine going back to a normal mattress. Now off to ARGOS to buy the memory foam pillow.

We bought a topper for the bed. It lasted two weeks before being consigned to the attic. Absolutely hurt my back. Stayed last year in a Hilton in NY which claimed to have the best beds in the world. It was wonderful, no idea what the matress was but never had a better nights sleep.

We have a memory foam mattress, bought last year from an ebay seller, about £300 for a KS with free next day delivery. It's wonderful, and I really struggle to sleep on anything else now. Went away visiting relatives over Christmas and never slept a wink, couldn't wait to get back home to my comfy bed!

we just had delivery of our king size pocket sprung divan with pillow top. I slept in one of these in america and they feel real luxury.

Could you tell me which one you bought - and are you still happy with it?

I have been saving my £2. and £1. coins all year and have banked over £500. I really need a new bed as my base is a bit broken. I would love to buy one of the new memory foam beds - preferably with either an end drawer or two drawer option. It needs to be a double size.

Can anyone tell me if it is worth paying the extra for a memory foam and if anyone can recommend a bed it would be great. As its January - I wondered if there were any good sales on beds.

Any help or information greatly appreciated - thanks and Happy New Year to you all xx

We changed to a memory foam mattress about a year ago.
All i can say is that neither of us now have any aches and pains in the morning. On top of that they are hypo allergenic as well.
Will never buy anything else in future.
  • Ok, we've been out testing mattresses all afternoon....I like the feel of memory foam mattresses, however my wife doesn't. She has a point....there's no doubting their comfort - but if you lie still for 2 mins it moulds around you, effetively putting you in your own little 'valley'.....this makes turning over a lot harder (compounded by the fact that they don't give you a 'spring rebound' effect of a traditional mattress as you turn either...therefore even more effort).

The John Lewis Cavendish Mattress (mentioned earlier in this thread) was particularly hard work to move after lying on it for just a minute...therefore it's been struck off our shortlist.

We really liked one that John Lewis had (not memory foam)...it had 3000 springs in it...made by Nubed.

Certainly all the mattresses with 2000+ springs (in King Size) were in a different class to anything else (memory foam or other).....so this is what we'll pursue.

There don't appear to be any genuine reductions at the higher levels (eg was £1,995, now £999....yeah right!)...the Superstore "Dreams are in cloud Cuckooland" with dodgy (MFI-esque) price reductions but are still insanely high. Hoping to find a model that can be ID'ed & then ordered via the net (naughty I know, but until these bed wharehouses get real with their prices, blah blah)

Further testing & discussion needed methinks!

After reading about Cavendish KS mattress on this thread, ordered one. Should have been delivered yesterday.

Absolutely fuming with JL who phoned at 7 a.m. to say it wouldn't be delivered - hadn't come into warehouse. OH has phoned several times today (they haven't got back when promised) to find out when it's coming. It isn't! You can get one in store, but not via website - even though we have order confirmation etc. We can have our money back ... Big deal!
