I used to live and currently live in a small village, nearest small town is 6 miles, so 20mins car journey, only buses are odd times throughout the day. I didnt really consider work until I could ride my moped (16), the reason I got the moped is because it was what every other teenager around here had to do to get out of the village. It then meant I could go to town to work in supermarket (£2.08 an hour, makes me feel old thinking back, lol)in the evenings. Personally I dont think your parents are being unreasonable, I certainly wouldnt drive my daughter to and from work, would cost me as much in petrol as she'd be earning no doubt, so whats the point? I would however give all the help and contribute money to taking CBT and getting a moped. OP, how long till you 16? Have you considered a moped? Other suggestions are all good for making money too.

If i wanted my 15 year old to work, I would sit down with him/her and help guide him/her through the process. That's part of being a parent - you teach and guide your child.

Could you ask your parents to help you with some advice at least? Ask them how they did it - parents love it when you ask for their guidance based on how fantastic they were at your age haha. Try a bit of flattery - 'dad I want to work like you did...how did you get to work?' Perhaps ask them to spend half an hour looking at options and get their feedback...eg 'well i can babysit for Mr and Mrs Smith down the road but that means i will need to cycle home at midnight'...see how they feel about that.

Its not really fair for them to get onto your case and then not help you at all with good old parental advice. And then tell you to wait until you are old enough for a set of wheels (which they won't be buying). All of that sounds a bit more like arguing than constructively working together as a family to address something that you all seem keen to have happen:-)

I would like to know that too! or was it a typo and it should have read Massages? not sure I would want my 15yr old doing that!

saying that - there are job opportunities in very rural areas - farms sometimes need seasonal workers or are willing to pay minimum wage to teens for a couple of hours work before or after school and on weekends at busy times. BUT, they are hard to find and you have to be persistent! if you want to babysit, then put a card in EVERY possible shop/post office window and specify you have to be picked up and dropped off if over a certain distance from your home.

I for one DONT find it normal, or safe for a teen to cycle to work for more than 10 or fifteen minutes on country lanes, and after dark it can be lethal! only a townie would think thats reasonable!

I hope not massages . I had a vision of some sort of telegram biking service but im pretty sure messages doesnt mean that! :rotfl:

Thanks- hadnt thought about farms either. I#ll start asking about.

Dog walking? Any of the neighbours goot animals you could offer to help with?

What about an ad in the local corner shop/garage etc just introducing yourself and offering your services as a babysitter/dog walker/whatever?

I only turned 15 last month so it seems an age to wait before I'll be able to ferry myself about. This is where my argument falls down because it does seem to be unreasonable for them to be giving me lifts. However, it wasnt my choice to live in a rural area and it does my head in! Whenever I want to go anywhere I end up staying at friends houses whose parents then give me a lift because they're taking their kid too. I feel like a right scavenger!

We had a leaflet dropped through our door just last week from a local girl who lives in our village. She explains on it that she is looking to do bits of work for people in the village to gain her some money for between finishing school and starting college in September. I think she also said that she will continue it on weekends and evenings come term time. She goes on to list things she may consider doing such as housework, ironing, garden chores such as weeding or mowing, babysitting, getting shopping, even dropping in on elderly relatives for people who are very busy to see if they need shopping or letters posting etc. I thought it seemed very resourceful - maybe you could do the same? Post flyers through local doors....?

Good luck (oh and i think your parents sound bloomin' pains LOL.... saying that, my little boy is only 6years so i may have changed my mind by the time he gets to your age hahaha!) :A

Oh and i lived in a pretty rural area (still do, just a different one lol!) and i hated having to rely on parents for lifts GRRRRRRR!!! I sympathise!! xx
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?
