ive seen a training dvd of self serve checkouts and an attendant let 4 plasma fires just go straight through he was watchin the guy and he just walked out. Most times the assistant is too intimidated by a thief and doesnt want to confront them.

On a more heroic note an old manager (possibly one of the most gentle blokes you could meet) noticed a dodgy character and watched him stealing, as he went through the doors he ran, the manager chased but no one had seen him leave he chased him for over a mile and pinned him down. he had him held to the ground for about 20 minutes and not one passer by helped, fortunately two policemen walked round the corner and took the dirty thief away

When I was a SA I frequently saw a certain person trying to steal things but usually scared him off by my "evil looks"! but once I was by the shop door with my hands full of game cases when he ran down from the second floor with a not so concealed concealment in his jacket. As I went to try and stop him he shoved me out of the way and ran out of the door.
A few days later I was walking home after a late shift on my phone to my then boyfriend (now husband) when I saw the guy walking down the road in my direction. As soon as he saw me he looked incredibly nervous and kept shifting his gaze to an equally scummy woman next to him who I guessed was his girlfriend. when they crossed my path I laid into him calling him a dirty thief and thanks for shoving me when I'm pregnant, then asked his girlfriend if she knew her boyfriend went round stealing ps1 games priced at 99p each. she looked shocked and he was really embarrased, I told him never to come back to the shop and that I'd already phoned all the neighbouring game shops describing him too - never bothered us again!
although my bf thought I was being attacked cos we were talking then suddenly I was shouting at someone lmao!

I worked in the wines and spirits section of Morrisons when it was separate to the main store.
A man came in and bought 2 of the huge bottles of whisky then 5 mins later came back and bought 4 cans of lager. Straight away the manager came over and asked to see his receipt for the whisky which he showed them. The next time he came in they watched him, what he was doing was buying 2 bottles, putting them in his car then putting 2 more bottles in his bag when he came back. I was only 18 and completely shocked that someone could do such a thing, I was a very innocent child lol. Now I wouldn't trust anyone, some of the little old ladies who look so frail are the best shoplifters!
I made an embarrassing mistake on my 1st day though, there was a woman pretending to look at things but her eyes were everywhere and she looked really suspicious so I shouted the supervisor and told her. It turned out she was the store detective, oops.

How spooky! I had a very similar thing happen to me in Mr M's a few weeks ago. Where a well dressed man carrying a laptop bag kept talking to me as I was shopping round the store. At the checkout he was right behind me. Made me feel very uncomfortable! Then he just walked through a closed aisle!

The lady in the queue behind me thought he must be an employee repairing computers. :rotfl:I watched in facination as he calmly put all his shopping in carriers and strolled out winking at the checkout superviser. At which point I nipped over to her and pointed out that he hadn't paid for his shopping. She was on the phone in a flash, and as I was walking out the store, having paid for my shopping, the security man was returning with the trolley but not the shoplifter.

I feel a bit guilty as I wonder what his back story was. Redundant? Hungry children at home? But I also feel a bit indignant at being used as cover!!!!
  • Best case of shoplifting I encountered was when I was a Night Manager for MR T's. The police used to come in and have a slap up meal in our canteen which I used to encourage as it wasn't a bad thing having them popping in and out the store at night as it was 24hr. I sat down to have a coffee with them and one mentioned it was a strange time of night to be doing a transfer at this time of night. I was shocked as no one had spoke to me about any transfer.
So I walked with the police into the car park to find 3 colleagues loading cages of wine into a transit van. As it transpired they had bought uniforms from a car boot sale walked into the store gone out the back unchallenged and taken the cages from the warehouse through a side reception entrance. They had loaded around 2k of beer wine spirits and had another cage to go.
Had to go to court and they got sent down for 18months and 2 years

I did the same thing in the shop I worked in too. There were two men dressed quite chav-ish who kept wandering around pretending to look at stuff and they were in the shop for ages, one of them kept hanging around near the door and every now and then glanced over to the checkouts where I was, I thought it looked dead suss and rang the store manager to come over and chuck them out. If the store manager had bothered to tell the staff that a couple of store detectives were in for the day it would have been nice! I'd been there for months by that point and had never seen them before!

I also got a mystery shopper thrown out once... to be fair to me, mystery shoppers are meant to be subtle and take their notes after they've left, this one looked like she was stopping to put something inside her jacket but she was actually trying to take notes on her mobile without being seen.

I used to manage for Sainsbury's. Best one I ever saw was a rather well to do lady wearing what I call a proper ladies dress, all floral and pretty. She hoisted up the dress and was wearing a suspender belt attached to the suspenders was a bag for life she proceeded to fill with wine. She walked out walking like she's pooped herself clanking. Yeap a bag of wine dangling inbetween her legs.

My brother in law was a salesman for Van Heusen back in the 80's/90's. He used to get loads of size 15.5 and 16 Shirt samples, and was allowed to keep or sell them as a perk at the end of the season. He was far too big to fit them, so he used to go around selling them at local Police stations. He gave up though when he realised how many were being stolen by the police -almost as many as they actually paid for!
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
