Shoplifting in Asda

No me I hasten to say! However I went to Asda late on last Wednesday evening and only got a few bits so went to the self service till. This man came and stood right up next to me in the till aisle and his enormous cases of lager kept bumping into my stuff. Anyway I paid for my stuff and he was still inches behind me and as I was packing my stuff he said "hurry up!" As I walked away he was still inches behind me and I realised that he was robbing two big things of lager. He must have thought that they would think we were together and I was paying. As soon as he got through the door he was off! No alarm went off so I told the security guard who thought it was funny and didn't seem the slightest bit bothered!

People have picked up TV's etc from shops and just walked out. Most staff and customers easily spot the dodgy type that look around before taking something but those, who simply, walk in, pick it up and walk out without batting an eye lid, are the types that people normally think "he's just bought those".

I find it funny knowing that people have the balls to do it, but of course, we end up paying for it, so it's not good kids... Crime doesn't pay ;)

Its a growing phenomena now or maybe I am more aware of it since the first time it happened to me. Being shy and reserved, I just holler "Who on earth are you, can you please step back or I will call security"...but I am well gone before they have found an unsuspecting "victim" ;)
  • It may be that he was not bothered, however the implications behind stopping someone and being wrong can bite you on the backside. Most companies use "scone" S.C.O.N.E. Relates to retail Loss prevention and store security. It is the list of things that must be seen before a stop can be done. I am unsure of the full thing but what I remember is....
    S - Selection.
    C - Concealment
O - Observation (constant, if you loose site of the subject they may dump the item. If you then stop them you are in the wrong)
N - None payment (usually passing last point of payment)
E - Exit (Leaving the store. If they do not leave the store they have not stolen anything)

therefore no attempt would be made to stop them.
  • Daughter manages a 'cheaper' store and shoplifters are an almost daily nuisance. They have to involve police every time rather than risk being seen as soft touches and inviting even more!

Arrived at her store at exactly same time as 2 guys and a woman walked out, with security hot on their heels as one guy had stolen something.

Daughter also there, guy protested, was asked to return, other guy became involved, whole thing escalated, albeit staff careful to keep themselves right, police called, guy caught with stolen goods, along with drugs on him.

Hours of paperwork for daughter and police. Ever present threat of escalation and violence. Found it pretty threatening, and waste of everyone's time. Costs of all this 'petty' theft must be astonishing when viewed like that.

we used to chase thieves out the store alot, so 10 of us would go after them, didnt catch them all the time but it worked.

Dh (policeman) and I were in the Co-Op a few months ago and he saw a man shove 3 hage bits of brisket up his jumper. The man the turned round and cought Dh watching him, he literally pushed me into the fridge to get past us and walked out the store. A teenage employee who was working, saw him and chased after him. Dh shouted to another employee what had happened but no-one did anything. The shop lifter was a big guy and the poor boy that went after him was pretty tiny.

Dh had to run out after them as no-one else was bothering. When he got out he saw them fighting. I waited in the store for a few minutes and was starting to get upset (was pregnant). I went up to another worker and explained what happened and asked if he would go out and make sure everyone OK. He looked at me like I was crazy and turned his back and walked away.

It took Dh coming back in with the man and the poor employee coming in with a burst nose before anyone actually listened.

    Xmas Saver!
I've seen a couple at christmas load 2 trolleys as high as they could, with all the expensive items in the first one. When the first is loaded, they distract the SA so that one of them can wheel the first one out to the car. They get past security as they have the trolley loaded with packed bags and have come from the tills. This person then loads it in the car ASAP and drives off. WHilst this is happening, the other person distracts the SA as much as possible, getting extra items from round the shop, assistants needing to find prices cos they have picked up items without labels etc.

Then at some point they go to find something and just don't come back to the till.

Then there is a big panic as someone realises a trolley with £200 of shopping has gone missing, and no shoppers can be found.....

That sounds quite a good one. I like the inventive ones. It's boring when people just get caught sticking things up their jumper. :)
