I've heard that even guys in the Army doing jungle training, use Avons 'Skin-So-Soft' so it cant be bad.

I'm not taking any chances this year when we go away as the mossies seem to pick out me and my 4 yr old grandson for some reason...so I'm packing lemon soap, lemon shower gel, Avon Soft and Fresh and a plug in for all 4 bedrooms and anything else I can think of....I am even taking an Aspivenin pack (mini pump) which draws out the poison to the surface of the skin to be wiped away.

Got my Avon so Soft through the post - doesnt smell great! Thats whats the mozzies must hate

I notiee the OP is going to Malta. We travel to Malta frequently and I have never been bitten although when I go to Cyprus or Greek Islands I am a magnet for the pesky creatures.

There are very few biting insects in Malta because, in spite of the heat, there is no running water ie rivers or lakes. When travelling to Cyprus and Greece I have found Skin so Soft to be effective and doctor has recommended DEET for when we go to Panama in October so will try that.

Let us know how you fare with the Avon stuff. I always get bitten and need something less corrosive (to my watch, mp3 player, headphones etc) than Deet.
