Argos - 2nd year manu. guarantee

Have done a search but can't find anything on this.
Bought a pressure washer from Argos, which came with 2 year manufacturers guarantee, in May 2010. It has stopped working, probably due to pressure valve fault. Called Argos who refuse to honour guarantee but said as it is "manufacturers 2 nd year guarantee that is down to the manufacturer. not Argos". Quoted Sale of Goods act etc but they won't budge. They need to be sure it is a manufcturing fault!!
Will call Nilfisk on Monday, but mad that when Argos advertise product comes with a 2 year manufacturers guarantee they (Argos) won't arrange replacement.
Any suggestions?

Is Nilfisk an EU manufacturer? If so then they will honour two year guarantee. Had similar issue with pump from argos, was a grundfos item and they were very helpful. I'll bet nilfisk will be more helpful when you call them.0

This is correct.
Up to 6 months from the date of purchase, any fault is deemed to be due to a manufacturing defect and it is up to the retailer to prove otherwise.
After this 6 month period it is up to the consumer to prove the problem is due to an inherent fault.0 -

Tbh op, its usually much easier and much quicker to contact the manufacturer yourself, even within the first 6 months. All Argos will do is contact them for you to arrange repair which just slows things down.0

Argos are actually exceeding what is required under the Sale of Goods Act - they give a 12 month g'tee, SoGA requires only 6 months.
As soon as you quoted SoGA they KNEW you were onto a loser !!
If the manufacturer gives an additional 12 months on top of the Argos g'tee, it is nothing whatsoever to do with Argos.
However - if it failed in year three - you might then have a claim under SoGA - but a pretty tenuous one at that..............
Unfortunately there is much incorrect information given on this subject - even in this thread:-Tbh op, its usually much easier and much quicker to contact the manufacturer yourself, even within the first 6 months. DO NOT do this !!!
There is a thread on this site at the moment where someone did just this with a vacuum cleaner - the manufacturer (who now has the machine) wants paying to fix it and the retailer is saying (quite correctly !) what can he do without seeing the machine !
Your contract IS NOT with the manufacturer !!0 -

Never though of that! Might have to think twice in the future if I have any problems.

One person has had problems. And in any case, what else would happen other than OP going to the expense of getting an engineers report, submitting to Argos, and then Argos finally phoning up the manufacturer to get it repaired.
Same thing happens, just a few weeks later. Great idea!Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

Do you still have the instruction leaflet - Argos (Home Retail Group) cover the 2 year warranty for some of the stuff they sell. I took a hedge-trimmer back recently and had to insist on them actually reading the warranty bit a couple of times - their auto-response mode seems to be "nowt to do with us guv".0

You are totally missing the point. Getting an "engineers report" is totally irrelevant in such a case. It is not needed - the item is still under guarantee from the manufacturer. Why waste money ??
If you buy an item from Argos (or anywhere) you normally have a one year guarantee from them. If it fails in the first year you are, in effect, throwing away your rights under that one year guarantee if you go direct to the manufacturer. The manufacturer is quite entitled to charge you for any repairs - HE has had no part in the sale, so why should he repair it for free ?
If the manufacturer gives an additional 1 (or more) year on top of that, then it is no use going back to Argos - generally, they have no legal obligation to meet after their one year - why should they repair it ?
The underlying problem is that so many people who quote the Sale of Goods Act don't understand it - nor do they understand what type of guarantee they have when they buy something.
As ManAtHome has quite correctly said, not all guarantees are the same - READ it, then if you get problems you can argue your point from the moral and legal high ground.0
