Car insurance for an 18 year old?

Hi my son has turned 18 in oct and has been saving up for his favorite car (BMW) I have got a few quotes and it costs more than the car is worth to insure! the cheapest has been around 8k and the car is worth 6-7k maybe a little less.

I understand that the car could be insured under a family members name but the problem is none of us drive.

Does anyone know where the cheapest place to get car insurance from for a 18 year old?

Cheers

  • our 19 year old son bought a £10k ...6 year old bmw 318ci coupe last year ... have done insurance in his name .. but with both parents as additional drivers .

best deal ..which we went with was rac at £2150 ,.. next best was norwich union ( same co ! .. at £2500) ,.. many at £3k up to £4k.

You'll find loads of posts on here about teenagers car insurance ..if you can find it on here ... i did full details a few months ago of the procedure i went through.

and that's for fully comp. .. car on drive .. 8000 miles a year .. decent area.

Thanks for that, I got a quote with the RAC and it's around £2600 a lot cheaper than before and by using quidco i can get £50 cash back :D

    Cheers!

  • I've heard that Bell, Swiftcover and Endesleigh are good for people with no no claims bonus too, so they might be worth checking out.

Not without you disclosing him as the main driver, in which case it would cost lots anyway. Not a good idea, even if you did drive. And he wouldn't earn any no claims discount.

How do you manage that? The cheapest quote I'm getting for a Nissan Primera I'm looking at (my first car though) is £1040 with Tesco Value. But a friend of mine said he was getting quoted crazy money when he was checking online on things like confused.com for his car, and ended up knocking loads off by just ringing round instead. And I thought the internet was supposed to be cheaper. Do you think I'll be able to get that down a bit? I've also done a pass plus, so I'm wondering what sort of money that knocks off. Incidentally, if anyone's looking for a large family car with cheap insurance, take a look at a Primera. I was actually getting quoted more for Polos and Fiestas.

The problem is 18 year old boy + fast BMW = Accident waiting to happen (in insurance company's eyes).

Have a look at KwikFit Insurance
