Re: Laptop-is this router ok?

Options
I'm using the very same right now and I'm happy with it. Before deciding whether it's right for you though theres a few details to clarify though. Firstly are you using dial-up or broadband, if the latter are you on ADSL using a modem or broadband via a STB from a cable co for example, this could alter what features the router should have(i.e. you may only need an access point). Also you have to consider what else you want, do you want to use more than one PC on the connection and network them(sharing files as well as internet connection) or just send your internet connection round your house to just the laptop. With that info people should be able to advise whether what you've found is a good start or other potential candidates for your needs.

by rights it will yes, however you will always have to have the other PC turned on if you wish to use the laptop to access the internet. If you got an ADSL Router then that would take the job over so you could have the PC wired into the router and teh laptop connecting wirelessly, however you could if necessary just put on the ADSL router and laptop without needing PC turned on. Ifyou intend always having the 2 on so you can share files etc. it should work just fine, it's very similar to what I do now. The only downside is that the router you've chosen is only B standard, this is fine if yo uare sharing broadband as it is much quicker than BB(this is how I use it), if yo uare sharing file sthough you may be better off with a G standard router which is much quicker on the file sharing side but little differenec on the BB side(apart from being more expensive!)

  • Just signed up for broadband and have a second pc in the house that I would like to link up. Is what Sheel is looking at what I should be looking for and are any of the PCW bargains at the moment suitable?

Sheel, this is what you need http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=1506595294&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=52244 a combined adsl modem router which is also wireless. Connect to your PC by cable and wirelessly to your laptop. The pc doesn'zt need to be on, the modem router stays on and provides the adsl connection. Get servicepack 2 for windows XP and it has really easy to use set up for a wireless network although the netgear is a doddle to set up.
