Yum! :grin:Maybe not as cheap as the tomato based alternative, but cheaper than a carbonara packet, less calories and no sugar.
What you make is proper carbonara, not what comes out of a packet. When we lived in Italy, I embarrassed myself by asking in the supermarket for the jars of carbonara :o
    I soon learnt ;)
When I get the chance I'll dig out some of my recipes.

a tin of ratatoiulle makes a lovely pasta sauce especially whizzed in blender to make it smoother. any herbs/onions a bonus. leftover meats too or sprinkling of cheese.
shopbought pasta sauce tastes a bit sweet to me...

:rotfl: woops it,s going out of date, and when on early shift my normal getting up time is 04.30, takes me all my time to check if pants are on:D
Yep i get up at 4.30 am too. Same problem. Thought I was quite OS till I read this thread and am now feeling really guilty about the 3 half price jars of sauce I bought today, however, surely a jar of sauce with some fresh ingredients is better than a ready meal and when I have been up 14 hours by t time it's about all I can manage. Though I did make a casserole yesterday, meat from local butchers and fresh veg.

I made a carbonara yesterday, following the BBC recipe I usually use. Used up half a large carton of reduced cream left over from the fish pie the previous day (approx 23p), some smoked ham trimmings that I'd used to cover the Christmas chipolatas plus a couple of rashers bought on a 2 for 1 offer (approx 30p), egg yolk (box of 'catering' eggs, i.e. older ones from the farm shop at 40p for 6, so about 7p), onion, garlic, black pepper. Made enough for 4 portions, so dinner yesterday and lunch today for less than 70p + cost of spag.

I loiter on the os board but seldom post as I'm often found falling off the os wagon. However DH used to house share with an italian guy who tought DH to cook pasta sauce with tinned toms (usually go for middle of the range ones) onion, garlic, olive oil and tom puree. It is lovely & you know what has gone into it.

For me os is about thinking about the food you are buying/eating. Today we are having oven roast veg & lamb, tomorrow kids will have veg soup (made out of leftover veg) for a quick tea before brownies and guides and tuesday will be lamb cottage pie (leftover lamb) wed will be cornish pasties.

So instead of the one meal I would have had, roast lamb, we'll have three/ four meals and I know what will have gone into them all.
