I always have a stock of Lidl passatta in the cupboard, incredibly cheap at around 29p a tin!

I use the cheap tomatoes (16p for chopped here) and have to say I don't notice much of a difference between the ones I use (Somerfield) and the italian ones - but the Safeway Savers ones were dismal imho.
We tried Sainsbury's Basics tomatoes and were not impressed - a lot of watery juice and only about half the can of actual tomato. Whichever tomatoes are being sold as their regular buy are fine though (the label varies, probably according to wherever they have been able to get a good deal.)

Do I want to know what 'woopsie' mince is?

And some Flyladies would say if you did a meal plan and checked it every morning, you would remember to take sauce out of the freezer! But then I'm not a Flylady! ;)
:rotfl: woops it,s going out of date, and when on early shift my normal getting up time is 04.30, takes me all my time to check if pants are on:D

Tinned toms are aways on the bitter side.

  • I followed an Italian recipe for a chilli tomato sauce and it included 1/2 tsp cinamon. This seems to help with the bitterness and gives a lovely depth to the sauce, I add it to all my tomato based sauces now.

I have to admit to using Dolmio/ragu (bogof only though!):p for my lasagnes but this week I have bought some passata and am going to try and make my own:rolleyes: DH doesnt like garlic so will have to make do with herbs, have mixed herbs and basil , so hope this is ok. The white sauce I am hoping is a basic white sauce? with a bit of cheese?(can make a good cheese sauce) I am hoping this is ok as its not got any sugar or additives etc, just hope they'll eat it!

I don't make my own pasta sauce because it's cheaper, but because it's healthier. Sometimes it works out cheaper I think but that isn't what matters to me.

I might try that Passatta if it isn't full of sugars etc worth a try to be nosey :)
One day I might be more organised...........

I made a basic sauce from scratch tonight after being inspired by this thread.

Half a jar of Morrisons Passata (34p/jar) 16p
1 small onion (unsure of cost, poss about) 30p
    1 clove of garlic (23p/garlic, 8 cloves) 3p
Oregano (donated by MIL, but negligible cost)

Fried the onion and garlic, then added the passata and a small sprinkle of oregano and simmered until it was a fairly thick consistency (about 15mins)

So time-efficient, fresh ingredients, and tasty. Oh and it cost 49p and made enough for a really good dollop for 2 people. So less than 25p/portion :D Sounds OS to me.

I guess add mushrooms, peppers etc depending on personal preference.
