Table themes

I'm not sure if there are any other threads about this, so I'm sorry if there is.
My OH and I cannot decide on a theme for the tables at our reception. He loves F1 and cars and wants either drivers or cars. Although I'm not very impressed with this idea, it is an idea of his and I want him to have some input.
I thought of Gemstones.
Have any of you got any good ideas for us? Thank you

hiya you could do things for drivers names
like a button for jensen button or a road for john rhodes
or if you really wanted the gemstones then each table could have a different colour theme and then be named after an F1 team so ruby (red) could be ferrari emerald (green) and gold for lotus etcThe only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 50 -

thats similar to what we did ( pics of sweets instead of the names)
was thinking as well , use some less known names and get your guests to guess them , would get people mingling. could also have a prize

We are doing Enid Blyton book series. We've collected old hardback books for ages to put on the tables and customised them to be the place settings. We have the five find-outers, the secret seven, the adventure of series and the faraway tree so far.
Odd maybe but our reception is all 1940's thrifty themed so baked hams, big cheeses, doorstep wedges of bread, homemade pickles and lashings of ginger beer. Nothing remotely modern allowed

How many people do you have going? You could split the tables into gemstones then for a place setting have a simple nicely printed or written card held down with a small lump of the stone for that table. The stone would also double up as a favour?
You can get cheaply all sorts now from shops but it'd be cheaper to avoid proper gem collector shops. I think ancient wisdom wholesale used to sell them in packs of about 10 minimum for each type but not been on there for ages.
Off the top of my head some cool ones would be:
Amethyst
Calcite
Obsidian
Tigers Eye
You could put a description of the alleged properties of each stone and a background to it in the centre of each table on a little card mounted in a photo frame? I have a book here with all the properties and where in the world etc things are found so could easily let you know

If you do go with what your partner likes then you can use corners in F1 or track names.
There are some good ones if you look into it.0 -

Just have to say, that's a brilliant, or should I say spiffing, theme! I usedto love reading Enid Blyton books - The Faraway Tree was my favourite! So are you wearing a fabulous 1940s gown?
Sorry to take the thread off on a tangent Gem
I think that double mummy's idea of combining F1 names with gemstone colours is good - you both have your tastes andinterests represented that way.
As an aside, I went toa wedding where thetables were all named after Premiership football pitches!

Thanks for your comment. I love Enid Blyton books but who can ever remember the names of the 5 find-outers or the kids from the Adventures of... series? We have got a lovely old book for each guest and customised them so that the insert tells them why we chose the theme and the inspiration behind the books. The way I see it, most people have read at least one of her books so whatever the age gap between guests, there should be a topic for discussion, even if only to argue over what the names were of the children in the books. We are both complete geeks so nerdy is good for us and our guests know us well enough to accept that!
I have not found an original 1940's dress but have got authentic accessories courtesy of a lovely shop in Exeter called The Real McCoy and an appeal I made on freecycle! Freecycle is worth a shot if you don't mind second hand things as people have all sorts of bits left over from their wedings. I got a lot of craft stuff to do my invites and various bits of crockery and teasets etc.
We're also having an old fashioned games table. Antique games go for pennies in unwary charity shops not realising their worth and we've got some genuine 1940's and 50's games in really good condition for our guests to ponder over before trying to work out how to play them!
I've spent so many years loving the idea of a small wedding with close friends and family that is totally informal and in-keeping with old fashioned weddings when times were tough and people pulled together. The sense of community back then was awesome and I am a complete social history and wedding nut.
Luckily I am marrying a nerd of equal proportions so it works out great. I highly recommend a good geek to anyone. Geeks and nerds are awesome. I don't know what i'd do with a sporty, trendy type. It'd kill me to fight for the bathroom!
Sorry, I have digressed and rambled. I could happily talk about weddings for hours. Self confessed wedding junkie.0 -
We're thinking of having the names of places that we've been to - so places that are special to both of us.
I know nothing about F1 though, sorry!Virtual Sealed Pot Challenge #148 - £59.93
