I too can recommend Metronet - nearly a year of service with no problems.
I have the 512kbps service. Has anyone upgraded to the 1024 or 2048 service and if so did you notice the difference? Martin's article seemed to hint that it's not worth it. Is this true?0 -
i was told today that metronet are doing free upgrades this month only to the 1024kbs service... is it wort hit? it costs a £5 more a month?0

Sunil you are right - but as most people don't know the names of the packages i referred to BT's Unlimited package (as opposed to the BT Yahoo Unlimited package)

Anyone out there with Tesco.net? A crap name for an e-mail address, but no problems with their dial up service.
Tesco is launching a broadband service at the end of the month for £19.99 all in. No more details and it's not on their website yet. E-mail yhem from tesco.com homepage if you're interested............Hickers0 -
Hi Eeveryone, I am so excited as have been a member for months and read loads of articles and bought the book but only just managed to use the forum............... it took me ages to work out how to.
Anyway - Q:
Is the cost of broadband an addittion to my bill or will it replace my current internet package with BT. This is approx £12 per month and BB will be 17.99 per month so will I actually only pay 5.99 extra???
Thanks
DianeOh how I dream............0 -
the problem with cheaper broadband suppliers is you get what you pay for.wannado may have cheap packages but the download limit is not good.2 gigabites a month may sound a lot but once you get into broadband downloading having a limit will severely limit the potential benefits of having adsl.example,an average movie is around 800.000 megabites so with the limits you may only be able to download 2 a month, with some of them you couldn't even download one.the best web site for comparison is adslguide.org which will show you all packages for all the major players, plus users rate their suppliers giving you guides on speed, customer service etc.my advice would be to goto a supplier with no limit.it may cost a couple of pounds more a month but the benefits far outway the cost.avoid the big ones like bt,aol and wannado because there just not competative.you can get good, fast broadband with unlimited download for around 20-25 pounds a month, and thats without paying connection costs which is another way of screwing cash out of you.my advice is avoid download limits and use adsl guide to find the best package.remember you will be contarcted for twelve months so you dont want to be stuck with some of the rubbish out there.0

bt aren't good.17.99 is on top of your bill.they are slow with bad customer service.personally i use pipex and have no complaints but check adslguide.org to find what suits u.0 -
tbfccats and lesandflynny,
Broadband is provided as an entirely separate service to your telephone service and your line rental. This is the case on BT and similar on cable (e.g. NTL).
Think of it like this (this is how it works for me): BT sell me a line for £10.50 per month, One.Tel bill me for telephone calls on this line and Metronet bill me for broadband usage on the line. One.tel don't care about by broadband, and metronet don't care about my telephone calls, and BT just bill me for the line! (note: many (non moneysaving) people use BT for both calls and line rental). Therefore, broadband costs are over and above telephone call costs and line rental costs. Also, your telephone calls provider won't bill you for the time you are on broadband.

...but, if you have a dial-up internet package you would want to cancel this, so in this sense, yes it is only £5.99 a month more. However, unless you download movies (personally I rent movies or go to the cinema ::)) or other heavy usage pastimes, like playing games, metronet would be even cheaper. I pay less than £13 a month for "average" use (500 - 800 MB per month)*.
