Leaving London...but where?

I love a scandal

Don't worry, they'll be another scandal soon. I'm 39 and trying for my first baby! I'm not justifying myself either!
To the OP.
I would avoid Surrey like the plague, but that's my personal preference. Full of City types and 4x4's. No soul. Crap state schools - so I hear.
Do you travel north a lot? If so forget Kent, getting to the M40 and M1 is a nightmare, but I'd still rather live in Kent than Surrey.
Wokingham is nice along with lots of places out that way but for me it's too west and too near Heathrow (I need peace at night) but it works for a lot of people and there's lots of businesses down that way to keep you in employment. But if you can travel then north of the M25 has to be worth a look (unless it's Kent of course). Bucks or Oxfordshire.0 -
You could buy this in Hampton, great schools and villagey.

Essex is worth a look, constable country is less than an hour by train from the city. Chelmsford and colchester grammar schools are in the state sector but in the top 15 secondary schools in the country.Snootchie Bootchies!0

Oi! Nothing wrong with some parts of Surrey!
I would suggest Reigate or Dorking as worth a look. Much less commute than 90 mins to London, good state schools and good private schools, countryside on your doorstep, good transport links by rail, road, and air (gatwick not far away), and plenty of stock of period houses. Would probably be less of a culture shock from London than the depths of the countryside would be.
If you want to go further afield, how about somewhere like Heathfield in East Sussex?0 -
My jaw hit the floor at the '40' comment lol. I don't feel old enough to be a parent yet (if ever - probably never in fact) and I'm over 40

Jx
I was 27 when my son was born, Oh is a year younger than me.
Pretty much all the parents at our son's school (he's now 6) have at least a decade on us.
We had lunch with one couple and their twin sons, where the Dad left secondary school before OH and I were born!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I'd look at Kent and East Sussex, if I were you (although it's perfectly possible to bring up children in London - my siblings and I grew up here, my 6 year old son isn't fatally damaged by the town yet, either).
Perhaps places such as Headcorn (an hour by train from Charing Cross and Cannon Street), or Smarden / Bethersden / Biddenden (all about 5-6 miles from Headcorn, trains as above). Tenterden is lovely - no station there, trains go from Appledore, I'm not sure how long they take.
In East Sussex, Heathfield's rather nice. As is Lewes....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Well thats nice you have found a place at 2 hours drive. But I think its a not good decision of yours to move away from London. I think you have more good opportunities in London.0
