My breadmaker says to use plain flour for cake and add 2 teaspoons of baking powder - it still does not rise very well. But tastes great!"This site is addictive!"

There are recipes in the book for breads, but not cakes.
Would I use the setting for sweet bread?
What ingredients do I need?
In replying, please dont underestimate how biz I am at cookery:)

If it's got a cake setting it has very probably got a recipe for one somewhere in your book.
Anyway...
..give us a clue... what make of breadmaker do you have?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Please don't take this the wrong way:) but what is the advantage of baking a cake in a breadmaker
? I can see the point of making bread with it - no kneading, using the timer- but to make a cake you just mix everything up, bung in a tin and bake in the oven.

Again, as with bread - it's all done for you, including temps and timings. I suspect that the BM is cheaper to use (for a one-off cake) than heating the oven.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Hi,
I use any cake recipe. Put everything in the pan and set to dough for 5 mins. Use a spatula to push down any flour that is a round the edges. When it looks mixed set bread machine to bake. Usually takes an hour. Hope this helps.Olympic Bronze Challenge Target £1007

I can see a couple (potentially) - Less electricity or gas needed as you are heating up a smaller area (only relevant if you aren't doing something in the oven anyway) and if you are busy it can be left to do it's own thing while you go shopping/hang out washing/surf the web etc with no worries as to remembering to take the cake out in time.
It may also be a good way of people nervous about baking cakes to get decent results - baking is simple but has a real fear factor for those that don't kow how easy it really is!0 -
Thanks for those answers guys - I hadn't realised that the cake was mixed in the BM0
