  • I really feel for you & the hours you seem to work & the responsibilities you seem to take on. Keep your chin up!

I made yuk sung years ago & then did 2 stir fry Chinese dishes with bought sachet sauces. Maybe a healthier & slightly cheaper option for your Chinese. Will look out the Yuk Sung recipe for you. We went to a friend's party not long ago & they made a lovely Chinese curry. My husband has been badgering me to get recipe. They are on jolidaynow but will ask them in a few weeks when they & us are all back. I can pass tgat on too if of interest.

    Have a good day

Havent been out, even to go work since i fell really ill friday night so we have been making do with what is in the house so all meal plans have gone out of the window....i have never felt this rough my temperature was so high i was hallucinating like crazy, i was actually crying because i was so scared because i couldnt work out what was real and what wasnt.....no more hallucinations at the moment just need to keep my temperature down but feel rough as hell, sore throat, vomiting, earache, headache, aching all over really, been in bed the whole time and bless oh he keeps getting me water and fruit and cloths for my head. Hopefully will be better by tuesday as im supposed to have my sister from tuesday and i need to get shopping in the house, its the last thing i want to think about as i cant even taste anything, everything tastes like newspaper but i guess that will be good for my budget as i just ate plain rice on its own, granny has come over and made me a pan of soup which will be good for my throat.

This may be a really stupid question but i have never used a leek in my life, how big should the pieces be for the soup? the chinese recipe you were talking about i would love to know, i love chinese dishes

Loving reading your thread, there's only two of us to feed but we are on a low income but both work in a supermarket so we spend a lot of time following price control around so we can get whoopsies lol.

My freezer is crammed at the minute (we only have 2 shelves in the freezer) tonight i got onion rings - 90p, bbq spare ribs - 90p, 24 mini sausages -57p (i'm gonna make pigs in blankets with these), chicken goujons - 60p, 2 packs of 12 sausages - 55p each, a cheesey baguette - 29p.

We get staff discount and buy basics range too and I use all the coupons for extra nectar points/money off I can get. I've managed £7.50 worth of points in 3 weeks.

Do you have a sainsbury's near you? As the Sainsburys basics chicken portions from the freezer section is excellent. You get 2.5kg of chicken thighs, drumsticks for £3.79. Really good value :)
You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

I make up my shopping list from the special offers I see on Tesco and ASDA's web sites. I usually start with Tesco's half price offers and go from there. It's often easy to miss the offers instore but if I've printed out my online list I don't forget and if the shop hasn't changed the price labels I still know what i should be paying. for example, Tesco currently have one brand of milk for £1 for the same size they sell at 3 for £3 but I don't want to buy three and the offer isn't obvious instore but I noticed it on line.

Have to go shopping tomorrow before picking up my sister, still feel rough but not as bad as i did before so will just have to get on with it. Oh is working tonight but he ate his dinner before he left, homemade egg fried rice and whoopsied red thai chicken curry (never tried making egg fried rice before it was yummy& quick, this will also help towards trying to make my own chinese next month)

    tomorrow i need to get:
    small value mild cheese
    260g spinach
    tesco value bread
    mushrooms 700g
    peppers (3 pack)
    milk 4pts x2
    pitta bread x4
    salam
    tomatoes
    green beans
    kitchen rolls
    soft drinks x2

I think this will all be just under £20

    Meal Plans

    Tuesday:
Breakfast: Toasties (soup for me as im sick)
Lunch: Chicken Nuggets & Homemade wedges (soup again for me)
Dinner: Green Beans & Beef with rice & Salad

    Wednesday:
Breakfast: Sliced Salam, Turkish Green Peppers, Cucumber, Philadelphia in Pitta Bread
    Lunch: soup
    Dinner: Brown Rice & Salad

    Thursday:
    Breakfast: Toasties
Lunch: Baked Potato with Cheese & Sweetcorn
    Dinner: Spaghetti Carbonara without bacon

    Friday:
    Breakfast: Fried Egg & Salam
Lunch: Spaghetti carbonara (without bacon) from last night
    Dinner: Chicken & Fried Potatoes

    Saturday:
    Breakfast: Toasties
    Lunch: Leftovers
    Dinner: Spaghetti Bolognaise

    Sunday:
    Breakfast: Toasties
    Lunch: Leftovers
Dinner: Homemade wedges, chicken nuggets, fish fingers

I have noticed we are using way too much cheese, a whole medium pack of cheddar a week....its oh's fault as he always eats toasties (i hate them) but i need to grate this one when i get it as it will last longer(& i only got a small one so once its gone for the week its gone). We use a lot more milk than i thought we have been through 12 pints in the house in the last 2 weeks as me & oh only have it in our tea & ds has it in is cereal and before bed to drink, i think its mainly my cooking that uses it though. Thanks everyone for reading my thread so far.....

jaymac thanks for telling me about the milk i always look for offers but i never saw that, so thanks you just saved me £1 on my shopping tomorrow

ikkle87 what supermarket do you work at if you dont mind me asking. I love whoopsies but my fridge is crammed.....when i have my own house i want one of those double door american style fridges so i never have to worry about space again......one day

Hi, regarding cheese. Something I've discovered recently is that buying ready grated value chedder is cheaper per kilo than buying in a block. About £1.50 a kilo cheaper if I remember rightly.
  • Thanks for that i never would have noticed that either.....shopping list will now be amended

i love this thread, i have read all of the posts and have found some real good ways of saving. i do have some myself which may be of some use to someone...
i know that frozen veg and iceland has already been mentioned, however i get sweetcorn, broccoli, cauli, sprouts and peas from there. they are all about a £1 and are well worth having. the carrots i find to hard so i tend to buy value fresh then slice them and freeze them. so when needed just take out and cook. suppose you could freeze most fresh veg, still tastes the same to me and you wont have to bother preparing the veg as it will already be done.

when making a roast dinner always make as much gravy as you can and freeze it, just defrost and put on low on cooker add little bits of water until it boils and its just as fresh as the day you made it. ( always love my beef gravy lol )

real quick pizzas - 1 pitta bread, tomato puree, cheese, and anything else you want on it. put under grill on low until cheese melts, quick and simple and the littlen can have ago as well.

simple cauli n broccoli cheese - iceland frozen veg, cheese sauce, cheese. cook veg, pour over, sprinkle cheese ontop, put in oven or under grill until cheese has melted. goes lovely with gammon. plus the cheese is much cheaper in iceland.

my mind has gone blank because im tired lol. if i think of any more will post on here.

Well shopping is done.... did it 11 and picked ds and my sister after, as i didnt want to go shopping with them (my head is hurting enough), found out after picking them up at 1 they have only had a choclate bread so far GRRRRRRR!!!! So when i got home made them emergency tuna & sweetcorn sandwiches, then chicken nuggets & home made wedges then egg fried rice, dh decided for breakfast he wanted 3 pitta breads with different fillings (tuna&sweetcorn, boiled egg, philadelphia & cucumber and salam, green turkish peppers, cucumber & philidelphia) dont ask me why i actually did it but i guess he never asks for what he wants to eat and leaves it up to me what to make.....so what can i say im a soft touch. I just had soup for breakfast and egg fried rice for lunch not sure what dinner is going to be as oh had green beans yesterday afternoon at his mums house. My mum also decided to spring on me that she wants me to make a big cake (sorry 2 big cakes) for my stepdad as it is birthday......yep ok thanks i dont actually want any time or cooking ingredients for myself (god forbid that) and my kichen scales are not working or my bathroom scales as dh pratically flooded the bathroom while having a shower yesterday and its gone in the battery panel.

    Well anyway today i bought:
    mushrooms 700g £1.49
    bread £0.47
    grated cheese £2.08
    spinach £1.00
    peppers £0.85
    milk 4pts x2 £2.00
    kitchen roll £0.89
    tango 2l £0.79
    7up 2l £0.79
    salam £3.29
    pitta bread £1.00
    green beans £2.82
    cucumber £0.59
    tomatoes 8 £0.64

Which all comes to £18.70 if i can add properly? Which brings my current total to £85.04

The ready grated cheese was a great idea and i will see how long it will lasts for to give me a better idea for next months budget, it will probably save me at least £4 a month
